Complete Hysterectomy

I'm 50 and have always been in good health.  For the past two years I have been anemic.  Recently, I had a 30 day bleed and my gyn gave me meds to stop it.  I have had a good pap, good ca125, good uterus biopsy, but the ultra sound and ct we're abnormal showing a baseball size mass in my uterus and abnormal ovaries.  I'm scheduled for a complete hysterectomy on 11/12.  Should I get a second opinion? Is this customary procedure for these issues? I know very little about what to expect.

Spent two days in the hospital, but am now home and showered.  The tumor was near soccer ball size, and it was non-cancerous. I'm taking it easy as suggested.

I see that your surgery is coming up very soon. I just wanted to give some advice. Don't be afraid to ask for help from family and friends. Your Dr has most likely told you not to lift anything heavy, take stairs, have sex and get lots of rest for about 6 weeks. Most of us feel so much better before then but our bodies really need that amount of time to heal. Have a family member or friend get you some books and movies before you get home so you can sit in bed or on the couch to rest. Fix meals that can be frozen and popped in the microwave.I did extremely well after my surgery and I hope you do too. Please keep us posted on how you're doing.

If the baseball-sized mass in the uterus is a fibroid, it is probably involving the uterine wall and can't be removed in any other way.  I have two or three small fibroids in the uterine wall that my doc tells me cannot be removed, they are in my uterine sidewall for good until I die or have the uterus removed.  But a huge one (if a fibroid) like you're describing, if it is involved in the uterine wall as mine is, it just seems like the whole uterus would have to go to get it gone.  If it is a polyp *in* your uterus, then you would maybe want to get a second opinion, and you can always get a second opinion in any case.  But it doesn't sound odd to recommend a hysterectomy from what you have said.
