Unkown virus

Hello I had sexual relations protected with a massage girl in California. Shortly after 3 days I started experiencing symptoms, need to urinate and redness in meatus of penis along with redness and irritation in eyes. By the end of that week I had tingling all over boxer short area The following week I had trouble walking due to the pain and tingling, this eventually turned into burning in the urethra and scrotum lasting two to three additional weeks. No noticeable blisters ever formed.I also suffered nerve like pain from buttock down back of right leg.

I am now left with after 5 months from this incident pelvic pain, sciatica type pain, itching and burning on scrotum from time to time but less severe than before. I also wake with watery eyes, sinus congestion, white stuff on corners of mouth every day since exposure. I have taken multiple STD panels for every STD HIV, syphilis, goon, chylmedia, hep, and herpes at 2 weeks, 6 weeks and 3 months all neg. I even followed up with an HIV and syphilis at 4.5 months and was neg.

I did receive treatment for the possible bacterial infections STD given z pack, doxy, ofoflax, uribel and something for trich.

My neuro said it's probably a unknown virus. I have been on a few rounds of antivirals for herpes just to see if there is a reaction, the antivirals seem to help the symptoms but herpes test was neg.

I am thinking this maybe undetected herpes infection accompany with a fungal overgrowth due to excess antibiotics.

Also my CBC came back normal but WBC was in the low range.

Any idea what this is? Please help.

It could be NGU !!
What did you take for Trich ?! and have you been test for Mycoplasama  genitalium sometimes it needs another type of antibiotic like Avelox its always work and finally you can run urine viral culture if your doctor think its a virus it would catch Adnovirus or CMV in urine but i dont think it would be adnovirus cause it doesn't usually stays more than2-3 weeks..

Hey, Matt.  Welcome to the community.  Can you describe this sexual encounter?  Was it unprotected vaginal?  Anal?  Oral?  All/some of the above?  I've been having very similar symptoms for the past 5 months.  My story is below.  Please read through it and comment; maybe we can compare notes and research to see if we can sort this out together:

Hello all.  I am a 28 year old male.  Some of you may remember me from several months back.  Well, I'm here again because my symptoms still persist, and I really need an answer as to what's going on with me.  For those who are not familiar with my story, here it is:

In early March, I received oral sex from a stranger (I also had intercourse with her, but it was protected by a condom; no breakages, slip of condom, etc).  About 3 weeks after this incident, I started to get a fungal infection in my groin/anal area, which would itch from time to time, along with oral thrush.  My genitals also turned a red/pink color.  At 5 weeks post-incident, I had all my std work done.  Everything came back negative (Heb B, HIV, HSV 1 & 2, gon, clam, syph, etc), however, the fungal infection was confirmed by a swab test.  I was prescribed a fungal cream and tablet, but they didn't seem to help.  I was also getting headaches at the front of my head daily.

At the 12 week mark, I started getting swollen lymph nodes in my groin and armpits, along with unusual excessive sweating from armpits and palms of hands, even if it wasn't hot outside.  I did not have a fever either.  I also noticed I was having a tingling and pins and needles sensation in my left hamstring down to my foot.  Every once in a while, if I'm sitting still, my muscles will twitch.  This mostly comes from my legs, but occasionally it is in my arms and chest as well.  I went back to the doctor to have another full panel STD check again, including HIV.  The only thing that changed this time is that they picked up a Hepatitis B surface antigen with a 17,000,000 viral load, which I'm told is extremely high.  The only problem is they didn't find any antibodies for it, and my liver function tests came back completely normal.  I even retook my LFT/ALT 2 weeks after that, and they were still fine.  The doctors were stumped with my unusual blood work.

So, I decided to just let things play out and hopefully kick this over time.  All last month, for about 4-5 weeks, nearly all of my symptoms really mellowed out with the exception of the swollen lymph nodes.  The headaches were gone, no noticeable redness on my scrotum, didn't itch down there (not enough to complain about anyway; I understand we all have an occasional itch there sometimes).  Oral thrush and nerve tingling in leg, if they were there, were hardly noticeable.

Then, all of a sudden, about 9 days ago, my symptoms came back!  They weren't as bad as the initial symptoms (for example, the sweating on my palms and armpits aren't quite as excessive as before).  There is a bit of redness on my scrotum, but not as bad and doesn't itch like crazy as it did before.  Oral thrush is back also, along with pins and needles in legs and twitching of muscles/nerves.  I went to another doctor to get my lymph nodes checked out; they've been tender for about 3 months now.  Doctor examined them and agreed that they were slightly swollen, but told me not to worry about it for now.  I argued that I thought there were a couple in my groin that felt 'hard', but he said he's been working with lymph nodes for 43 years and disagreed with me.  Btw, they're about the size of a pea.  There are 2 on each side in the groin area.  He couldn't even feel the ones in my armpits, which is understandable because even I have a hard time locating them.  They're just painful from time to time.  He told me to give it a few more weeks, then he could do a biopsy on them.

So, here are my list of symptoms to date:

1.  Oral thrush (btw, the thrush is just a white coating on my tongue; it's not the typical thing I've read about on the internet where it looks like lesions/califlower or bleeds when scratched off).

2.  slight redness on scrotum (genitals/anus doesn't itch near as much as it used to)

3.  pins/needles sensation in nerves down left leg, along with muscle twitching

4.  swollen lymph nodes in armpits and groin

Okay, so here are my questions:

1.  Has anyone else experienced these symptoms and found the cause of it?

2.  What could the Hep B surface antigen with 17,000,000 viral load and no antibodies mean?  Especially if my symptoms are not classic Hep B symptoms?

3.  I've read a lot about oral thrush online, and almost every link goes straight to HIV.  Well, I've been tested twice now, and I've been told by all my doctors and other online experts that I DO NOT have HIV.  I also understand that thush in HIV-infected people doesn't happen until a later stage.  I have read that oral thrush can be due to 'viruses', but that's all it says.  Not one website identifies these possible viruses.  Does anyone have any idea of what kind of virus can cause thrush besides HIV?

4.  If I have a lymph node biopsy, will this identify the problem?

This has been going on for about 5 months now if you include the start of the first couple symptoms.  I really need some answers and for this to be overwith.  Please help!  Thank you, and God bless.

Hi raven

Thanks for your response, I actually did read your story before you posted here and thought it was very similar, one difference I didn't have Hep infection. The rest of the symptoms are spot on, I did have extreme tingling in boxer short accompanied by perineum pain to where I couldn't sit for days plus burning in testicles an urethra. This was after a protected oral and vaginal sex with a massage girl in southern California.
So far medication for herpes antivirals and using neurotonin nerve meds have kept the majority of symptoms at bay, despite testing neg for both herpes 1 and 2 multiple times. My neurologist seen similar cases in military men overseas who contracted an unkown virus after sexual encounter despite numerous testing nothing was ever found specifically to be the cause was determined viral in nature though, eventually the symptoms went away.
I am thinking I either have this or similar virus or herpes 1 which has been known to not show on testing for some individuals through blood but eventually picked up if and when they have blister formation, also the nerve pain seems to happen more with type 1 than type 2 herpes. This is just my hunch so far speaking to and reading multiple stories from people with this condition over the past five months.
Unless something else changes this is the only causes I can come up with.

Raven have you tried herpes meds such as valtrex, famvir or acyclovir? If they relieve your symptoms you may have found your cause, unfortunately I think they relieve mine, it maybe a psychological response but I don't think so. I went on and off those meds multiple times with the same relief and response each time. I plan on testing again at 7 months with a more accurate westernblot test. Oh I also took the HIV test through 4.5 months and was neg. And given the same answer from experts in person and online.

Hopefully someone else here can verify my hunch or lead us in another pissible direction. Take care and let me know your updates on your condition.

I'm also confused about the hep b surface antigen...and so are the docs!  Maybe a mistake?  Anyway, I'm going back in in a couple weeks to retake the test, so we'll see.

I really don't feel that herpes would cause all the symptoms we're having, especially the oral thrush.  I know you said you have white stuff at the corners of your mouth; do you also have a white-coated tongue?  Did you get tested to see if it's a fungal infection?

Did you kiss the girl also?  I did.  It's all just really strange, since both you and I had protected vaginal sex (the oral was unprotected for me).  I guess the most frustrating part is trying to figure out what I couldve possibly picked up from this girl's saliva that's lasting so long??  You would think that something this easy to transmit, nearly everyone would be suffering from it.  Especially in your case where even the oral was protected!  All very strange.

I will let you know what my hep b tests come back as, along with any other info I can find.  Probably also do a lymph node biopsy if they don't clear soon.

Please keep me posted as well on any new info you find, along with any additional tetsts.

I didn't kiss the girl, I also had white tongue and random mouth sores. I did have. 5-6 different antibiotic treatments since docs didn't know what it is they threw all the bacterial STD treatments at it.
I think this is what caused my fungal overgrowth, docs don't agree, but they probably wouldn't seeing as they may have caused that issue. I have since been treating it with natural antifungals and probiotics with some results.
Does your leg, pelvic pain increase while sitting? I was at a conference yesterday and had to sit for 5 hrs, the symptoms have really flared up since hoping rest will relieve it.

Matt,
Did the white tongue start before or after the antibiotics?  Mine started before.  Along with the white tongue (thrush), I have a fungal infection on my scrotum (which also started before antibiotics).  I don't really have mouth ulcers, except for the red blood blister I had at the 10 week mark on my inner lower gum.

My nerve pain/muscle twitching comes and goes.  It doesn't get worse while sitting, although most of the muscle twitching (which can be anywhere from my quads to my chest to my shoulders) usually happens when I'm sitting still.

My symptoms were at their worst between the 10 and 13 week mark.  They started to slowly go away after that, then flared up again a couple weeks ago, albeit not as bad.  Hopefully this means that it's slowly going away.

Do you have excessive sweating under your arms and on your palms even when it's not hot outside?  Also, where are the locations of your swollen lymph nodes?  (Sorry, I know you probably answered that before but I'm at work and typing on my phone so don't have time to go back and check your specific symptoms right now lol).  My lymph nodes are in my groin and armpits.

Keep me posted, and I will do the same.  Thanks, and good luck!

Got the thrush condition after antibiotics, which includes fungal infection scrotum, the mouth symptoms, folliculitis type skin pimples over back, watery eyes, sinus congestion, itchy scalp. Majority of which have gone away but still fighting it.
I did have sweating on palms but chalked it up to medication side effects I was taking, haven't had them since.
Get what feels like groin lymph node pains about 3-4 times a week. When this started I also had neck lymph node swelling for a day or so, but no groin lymph nodes.
Hopefully if we can't find out what this is at least maybe we can get passed it.

Went to eye doc says the eye symptoms are chronic dry eye not virus, seems too convenient it started jut after exposure, am doing treatment as doc suggested and seems to help though. Sinuc congestion remains have been on natural yeast treatment helps it a bit. The other day and few other times I was outside got sweating doing physical stuff, the next day I get very itchy in groin area followed by soreness, happened twice. Thatseems to possibly be fungal I think or others have said similar as herpes symptoms.
Also had a pain flare up after sitting excessively long which lasted two days not a normal thing to happen after just sitting. This is probably due to the infection which caused nerve damage but like you wasn't as bad as initial symptoms so hopefully it's subsiding.
Let me know how your hep test goes. Good luck.

I had 15x20 vision in both eyes before this infection and usually pretty white- since the infection I've seen deep red veins in my eyes, blurred vision and pain behind the eyes. Was diagnosed as dry-eye as well.

I have experienced thrush-like symptoms in my throat as well. Corners of mouth have felt tight when I open my mouth all the way, since day 1 of infection and never left.

My palms have also been very sweaty, bc I usually have very dry hands which will crack in the winter a bit from being so dry, and this whole summer they've been so moist I'm embarrassed to shake hands. My thighs, armpits and most of all groin have this same problem.

I have not tried neurotonin like you suggested but I looked it up and sounds like a great option. Codeine helps relieve pain the most for me, but it's not great for you long-term.

I've heard of many people testing negative repetitively for hsv1, which makes it even harder bc the doc really thinks you're crazy then, right!? definitely do a western- it's what we trust in my lab to detect extremely minute protein concentrations. I still haven't tested positive myself but I've only tried once now, and like i said my gf tested positive first time (doc's had never mentioned the idea of herpes at that point but I had an inclination from reading stuff online. refused to test and were going to have her pay out-of-pocket for it until the results came back.)

Recently I've had random shooting pains in some of my fingers as well which can only be described as nerve pain, mostly very fleeting sensations tho. Does your nerve pain vary considerably throughout the day or is it fairly constant? My testicular pain is constant but tip-of-penis pain varies quite a bit. I also have joint pain occasionally, and towards the beginning I was experiencing extreme muscle soreness and fatigue.

Also, the redness in my scrotum has actually just disappeared for the first time in ~4 months of infection. I used anti-fungal powder. I feel like the thrush symptoms and oddly tenacious testicular rash were caused at least partially by some sort of entire-body yeast infection. I did a "spit test for yeast" if you look it up online and came up very positive, but I'm pretty dubious about the authority of this. Have you guys looked into it? I also cut my sugar intake substantially. I've had the most relief today that I've felt since infection, but the hyper-sensitive testicular pain is unchanged.

Do either of you suffer photophobia from this (light worsens symptoms). Both my gf and I do, though mine is more pronounced.

I also had what may be described as post viral syndrome, fatigue and muscle soreness along with joint soreness mainly in extremities. I self diagnosed a slight systematic yeast infection as well due to my symptoms, docs deny it but I treated it naturally with threelac probiotics, neem, oil of oregano and whatever o/c yeast powder spray feminine yeast treatments I could find. Majority of testicular yeast is gone now, and scalp itch and foot itch as well. Still have some issues there time to time but not nearly as bad. Currently the sciatica pain which limits my sitting is the worst and my seek physiotherapy soon for it, along with the eye issues are the worst two conditions. I was healthy before this with no problems anywhere it's like my whole system is falling apart, very scary and even worse docs have no real answers or don't even acknowledge it.

Hey, Matt.  Like I mentioned before, I'm no doctor, but your case really puzzles me.  You said you had protected sex (even oral!) with this woman, and didn't even kiss her.  That pretty much means you exchanged absolutely no bodily fluids with her.  Are you sure couldn't have picked something else up from someone/something else somewhere around that period?  I can understand why your mind would go straight to herpes, (and I'm willing to bet that you posted your concerns in the herpes section, right?), in which they told you that you don't have herpes because of the non-classic signs and your negative tests.  Well, my friend, I will have to agree with them.  I sincerely don't think that herpes is your problem.

Think back......if this sexual encounter was protected (hell, even the oral was protected, which hardly anybody does), and you didn't even kiss the girl, are you sure you couldn't have caught something from someone else around that same time that wasn't protected???  Maybe not even sexually realated?  Maybe you had an open wound or something and got someone elses blood on it???

P.S.  I also tested negative for hsv1 and hsv2 twice now, so if your symptoms ARE from herpes (which I seriously doubt they are), then we are not suffering from the same thing.

Good luck, and keep my posted.

Hey, colleague.  Sorry to hear about your symptoms.  Can you please tell us a little about yourself (sex, age, etc.), along with your history, and any ideas on how you may have got this infection (was it a sexual encounter)?

Please list ALL your symptoms for us so maybe Matt and I can see if we can relate to them, and we can tackle this thing together.

UPDATE:

Went back to the doctor this weekend, and got my test results back (well, most of them; here's the story:)

Like I mentioned before, I had a white blood cell count, overall blood cell count, CD4 count, swab test on my tongue to find out what this 'white stuff' is, and a repeat Hepatitis B surface Antigen test.

Turns out the white coating on my tongue is not thrush (fungal infection), much to my surprise.  Instead they found a bacterial infection.  Apparently, it's a bacteria that we all have small amounts of, but my mouth was not keeping it at bay.  Okay, so this, accompanied by the yeast infection on my scrotum tells me something is really wrong with my immune system.  In a way, I was relieved to find out it was merely a bacterial infection, but still nervous about why I couldn't keep this bacteria under control.

THEN, the next test:  CD4 count.  This is where I started to get really nervous.  BUT, much to my surprise, my CD4 count was 1,353!!!!  The doctor told me this was really good and even much better than the average 'healthy' person (which I already knew anyway by reading the internet.

I took the HepB test from a different lab, where I told them to forward the results to the hospital I go to, but turns out they didn't, so I don't have those results and will have to go back in next weekend for the results (can't take off work to go during the week).

The doctor still didn't have an answer for my symptoms, but advised me to take a sugar level test, suspecting diabetes.  I literally bet her money that I didn't have diabetes, but took the test anyway.  I will come back here next week to fill you all in on the final results.  I'm kind of expecting my white blood cell count to be a bit high due to the bacterial infection.  I'm taking an antibiotic for it now for 7 days, so I will also let you know how that goes next weekend.  If I can get rid of this white stuff on my tongue, that's one less symptom I need not worry about.

By the way, I stopped smoking cold turkey today.  It's gonna be hell, but I know that smoking weakens your immune system, especially in your mouth, and it's well worth quitting if it means getting rid of these symptoms.  Hopefully, the yeast infection on the scrotum will go due to this also.

I will keep you all posted!

P.S.  Still really confused about the symptoms vs. the tests.  If something is making my immune system not function properly, then why is it that my CD4 count is so high??

Doctor I saw recommended an immunologist.  I may go and see one after I get all my final tests results back.

Hi raven thanks for the update. I also had a diabetes test done which was neg as well. Docs don't seem to know what it is either, I didn't have any other sexual relations at that time so if it's STD related it's from that incident. But one thing that did happen was during intercourse she tightened up causing a pop noise I felt in my shaft, I paused at that time thinking what the heck was that but it didn't hurt. I am thinking maybe something physical inside tore causing the pain, but the pain is so diffuse ranging from both buttocks, thighs and groin that I am not sure that could be the full cause. Got to go now but will update more as I find things out.

My symptoms:
Flu-like symptoms come and go.
Post-viral Fatigue Syndrome
Random shoots of pain particularly in fingers, toes, feet, hands.
Blurred vision comes and goes. Red, veinier-than-normal eyes.
Headache comes and goes located behind eyes, associated directly with blurriness.
Dull and constant testicular ache.
Hyper-sensitive testicles.
Testicles slightly reddened, shinier than normal, but also usually slightly moist.
Swollen inner cheeks and sometimes tongue.
Very white tongue/soar throat/thrush symptoms
Almost all symptoms worsen in sun and heat exposure, including if I induce the heat by working out (can be in a cool room).

Contracted from one incidence of oral sex with girlfriend, unknowing that we had oral herpes, which MUST have been contracted via wine glasses with someone who just finished outbreak.

Been tested for all STDs including HSV1 and 2 and negative everything. Urine analyses, and two blood cultures to test for fungal and bacterial infections in blood. Swab tests for bacteria/fungi in mouth. Was determined eye was a 'mild viral infection' by opthamologist. Ultrasounded testicles with no find. Blood tests revealed that I was 'exceedingly healthy' as well, in the midst of the worst I have ever felt in my life.

UPDATE:

Went back in yesterday to get my results from the tests I took last weekend.  As you know, from the tests I took 2 weeks ago, I had a bacterial infection in my mouth and was prescribed an antibiotic.

Results:
1.  White blood cell count:  Normal (which was strange to me considering they found a bacterial infection in my mouth).
2.  Diabetes/Blood Sugar Test:  Normal (Negative)
3.  Red Blood Cell Count:  A bit on the high side and high in iron, but doctor said that this is normal considering the lifestyle I live (body-builder=much more protein/red meat than the average person).
4.  Hepatitis B Surface Antigen Test:  POSITIVE

As all of you already know, I tested positive for the HepB Surface Antigen months back as well, where they didn't find any antibodies and all liver funcion tests came back completely normal.  Since this recent test that came back positive again, I have not taken another antibody or liver function test.  Doctor recommended to set up an appointment with an immunologist instead, which I will do as soon as I get my health insurance sorted out.  Until then, I am post-poning any more tests.  So far, 3 doctors (one urologist, one specialist in hepatitis, and one GP) cannot explain my test results.  None of them have ever seen a HepB surface antigen test come back positive with no antibodies for it and normal liver function tests.

Symptoms to date:
1.  Absolutely no classic symptoms of Hepatitis (jaundice, pain in abdomen, etc.)
2.  Lymph nodes in groin still tender (2 noticeable ones)
3.  Lymph nodes under armpits, although still there, don't feel as though they are as significant as before, but still get irritated/tender from time to time.
4.  Unusual sweating under arms with the slightest bit of physical activity (even walking; and even when it's not warm outside), along with occasional sweaty palms, although rare.
5.  Still have the white tongue, which they told me was not thrush after a swab test; instead a bacterial infection.  GP told me to give it a couple weeks to improve.  If not, they would test again and, if the bacteria was still there, put me on another antibiotic.
6.  Still a slight redness on scrotum.  It has gotten quite a bit better over the last several months as well as the itching from the anus.  Surprisingly, when I was on an antibiotic this past week, they didn't get any worse.  When I first got symptoms, the docs put me on antibiotics (after I already had a fungal infection on my scrotum), and they turned VERY red and it covered my entire scrotum.  This time, there was absolutely no change to what it has looked like the past couple months (I'm taking this as a good sign that my immune system (if it was, in fact, compromised in the first place is fighting back.....and winning).

Still don't know what to make of the test results.  I still think that the HepB test is mistaking another kind of virus for HepatitisB, but I'm no professional.  Regardless, the FACTS remain:  HepB Surface Antigen positive that HAD a viral load of 17,000,000 (I say 'HAD' because I did the viral load test 3 months ago, and I have no idea what it is now).  I will wait to see an immunologist to find more out.

This is all just very strange.  But like I said, I'm staying optimistic because the symptoms DO feel like the are slowly getting better (albeit VERY slowly), and all other blood work is coming back completely normal.  Hopefully the immunologist will have some answers for me, and this infection will rid itself from my body soon.

I will keep you guys updated.  Best wishes and prayers to all who are suffering.

Glad to hear you're starting to feel better.
I am too, very very slowly.

I don't think you should be dismissive of hep b. There are reported cases of people who never develop the antibodies targeted by the test:
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/7276146

Also it's frequently "asymptomatic", which I would define as the patient having no symptoms which are obvious to a doctor.

Just finished reading all these post . Can I say one can have many symptoms but you have to look at the bigger picture..
Do you stress a lot ? If so does it agrevate things?
Do you have tight under wear, tight elastics usually box style ones will cause bad circulation.sciatic tingling pain etc
Regarding mouth  white on tongue lack of water dehydration. Due to anxiety levels Try 2-3 glasses of water do symptoms reduce after a an hr or so...Brewers yeast resolved this for me it  assist with many things...up to 3 tablets three times a day... Careful not to use too much might get constipated ,keep watch of that
The natural vitamin b will assist with anxiety and many other things...
Check vitamin c levels, most dr will not....ensure test done correctly needs o be refrigerated straight after doing it. Can take up to 3000mg per day...500 mg tablets for about 3-4 days then 1 per day for about  a week...monitor self .
Kissing, breathing etc can all transmit many things flu, kissing disease and many others.. Though immune could be down etc and your stress levels high can have created a cocktail of symptoms etc..
Relax yourself fully and work it out ,though if you have had something bad happen prior to all these symptoms like a break up, loss of job etc consider this aspect ... See a counsellor.
Hope this helps
I am no doctor just telling you what I did when  came down with many of the above symptoms..
Multivitamins, zinc, brewers yeast I take at various intervals listening to my body and workin it out...
Work with your doctor, though they don't sometimes ask the detailed questions like what was happening in your life before this happened and how you coping,,,,really coping?? This all helps.

Good luck
