I am male, I have had a healthy stomach my whole life. My mother brought me up on fruit and veg with stable meals each day until I was about 18 where I started to cook for myself, mostly things like frozen foods, ready meals etc..
Years after, I still was fine with my stomach. No pain or discomfort of any kind at all.
Since about 10 yrs old, I have had a constant bacterial build-up in the back of my throat (didn't know what this was at the time), I had a barium sawllot test last year when I was 26 to find out what this thing was at the back of my throat.
2 or 3 days after the barium swallow test I began to have severe stomach pains around my abdomin/kidneys, and needing to go to the toilet very quickly after eating some foods, but not always.
I went to the doctor who diagnosed me with having IBS. He suspects this beacuse my mother had IBS when she was in her 20's, and so naturally they assume its hereditary and dont entertain the posibility it could be anything else.
I just find it interesting that I have a healthy pain free stomach my ENTIRE life until I have this barium swallow test, then few days later I have IBS, and ever since that day I have been in pain with my stomach. No matter how healthy I eat I am always having pain. The doc prescribed Buscopan (hyoscine butylbromide) to help with the sharp pains, but it does not help much.
Does anybody think this is more than a co-insodence and I should investigate this further?
If so, how do I go about this? All the doctors at my surgery I have spoke with say the same thing, that it is impossible the barium sawllow test can cause anything like this. So what do I do, request to see a gut specialist in the hospital or something?
I dont really want to have a colonoscapy if I can avoid it, maybe there are some scans or other non-invasive ways of diagnosing this?
any help or opinions would be most appreciated, thx
