Can it be IBS?

Hello, I have been experiencing severe upper right quadrant pain for about 3 months now. The attacks are random, but they only happen at night. My attacks usually start around 11 at night and last until 4 or 5 in the morning. I can feel the pain radiating from my upper right quadrant all the way to by back. On a scale from 1 to 10, my pain is an 8. Tylenol 3 does nothing for me.  I have gone to the ER once because of the severity of the pain.  Ive been seeing a gastroenterologist, but he hasn’t been able to pin point anything out. I’ve done several ultra sounds and a CT scan, but everything comes out fine. Today he said I have IBS and he is prescribing me a mild antidepressant. I honestly don’t believe in my doctor anymore. Can anyone help me please.

I feel for you.  I have severe IBS and in the middle of bad flares, my life is totally devastated.    You mention CT scans and ultra sounds...what were they of?  Has your GI ruled out gallbladder issue, because wrap-around pain like you're describing is often associated with the gallbladder.  Are you bowels normal?  What helps with the pain if anything?  Changing position, heating pads, Biofreeze, screaming hot baths?

I think doctors are woefully ignorant when it comes to GI issues.   I was told years ago the "IBS" really stands for "I'm Basically Stumped."   It's not a definitive diagnosis, but rather a default one, when they have ruled everything else out.  Have you had blood work?  All normal?  If this pain gets worse, I would seek out another opinion.  Not all gastroenterologists are the same...there are some really, really stupid ones out there.  Keep looking for answers.  I wish you luck..
