Hi,
I understand you concern. Shockwave lithotripsy is the primary intervention of choice for renal and ureteral stones. “Shock wave lithotripsy (SWL) has made a revolution in the treatment of urolithiasis. It is a safe procedure with a lower morbidity than open surgery or percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCN.”)(1)
Also, it is important to note that the characteristic and size of renal and ureteral stones are important in choosing lithotripsy as the management of choice. “… consider ESWL in most patients with renal calculi as first-line treatment, except in patients with renal calculi bigger than 30 mm in diameter.(2)” Thus, the analysis of stone characteristics of renal stones by “UHCT(Unenhanced Helical Computed CT) is helpful in selecting appropriate patients undergoing ESWL for favorable outcomes and reduces the overall costs of the treatment of renal stones.(3)”

Discuss your concerns with your urologist.
How large are the renal and ureteral stones? As stated above, shockwave lithotripsy appears to be the intervention of choice. But your husband needs to be assessed thoroughly prior to any intervention. Your urologist will be the best person to answer your question since there are guidelines for managing renal stones.
