My younger sister is 23 years old and has been on dialysis for 11 years. She is a strong person. When her kidneys failed, she was told they wer working at 7%. Creatinine at 1600. Almost unheard of. She was the youngest person on hemp dialysis in the city. She had a access line put in her neck for 6 weeks after she had her fistula graft surgery. There is a numbing cream you can put on your arm when your fistula is ready to be used, wrap it in Saran wrap and that tends to help if you are nervous. That is a natural emotion to feel about the unknown. Just knowing that your body will get rid of the toxins building up is a good thing, but you will feel better. She feels 100% better after a treatment. She goes 4 times a week for 3-4 hours at a time, but as I did say she is 23 years old and still lives a relatively normal life for her age. Life will get better once treatment is started. There will be medications to talk and you will have to watch you potassium and phosphorus intake as well as a few other things but that will all be explained by your nephrologist. Hope all goes well and stay strong yu will feel better
she will certainly feel MUCH better starting dialysis!!!! she has a build of of toxins and her chemistry is out of total whack!!!!!! this will improve the situation greatly. I havent started dialysis but as my GFR is fall ing so fast, I have an av fistula (graft) in my thigh already. A fistula takes about 6 months to mautre for use in dialysis ie it cant be used immediately and so should have been done some time ago!!!! they can however make a fistula graft which is what I have, that can be used fairly immediately ie it does not need to mature
Dialysis replaces the kidney function, so she is likely to regain her normal health. Your nephrologist may advise you to check her serum potassium at frequent intervals (elevated serum potassium by more than 5 mmol/l may lead to worsening of the renal failure and heart-related problems). It is wise to follow a diet low in potassium and avoid citrus fruits which are rich in potassium. It is also advisable to 'leech' the potassium from the vegetables (by boiling them in water for about 3 minutes, discard the water and after washing in hot water, to reboil the same in fresh water) which helps to remove the potassium from the vegetables.
Hope this helped and do keep us posted.
