swollen lymph nodes aroun ear/neck

I have multiple swollen lymph nodes around my neck and ears.  I got results from ultrasound and I want to know what they mean.
There are multiple enlarged periauricular and left posterior cervical lymph nodes.
Some of these lymph nodeas demonstrate loss of central sinus echoes.
Surrounding soft tissues appear with normal range.

What does this mean?

hi

periauricular = around the ears

left posterior cervical = left back of neck

a sinus is an empty channel in a lymph node through which the lymph fluid flows

the central sinus is shown here:
https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/File:Schematic_of_lymph_node_showing_lymph_sinuses.svg

labeled as 'medullary sinus'

loss of central sinus echoes = some of yours are abnormal. I'm guessing that they are filled with matter, maybe from tumor - but perhaps more likely because they are infected since there are no other signs of cancer in the nodes. Infection also seems more likely than cancer if the bunch of nodes all swelled up quickly at once.

Hello.  I just wanted to post again, because maybe this post will help others.  I went to see my dr. and he ordered a ct scan and he will do a biopsy in his office, I guess like a fine needle aspiration.  He didn't seemed worried specially because the nodes are about 1 cm.  I feel so much calmer now.  I got scared because when the ultrasound was done at a walk in clinic they seemed very alarmed by it so I went for a second opinion and this time I feel it's going in the right direction diagnosing what is wrong.

You're very welcome.  Yes, it could still be an infection that your body is fighting on the inside but has yet to display any outward symptoms.  Good luck at the doctor's office today and let us know how it goes.

I must add that I noticed one first, then another, then one more.  But like you guys said is more likely is some sort of infection.  Again thanks, for the responses!

Thanks for your responses.  I've had them for a month now with no other symptoms.  They are not sore and I have not had a cold/ear infection or anything else.  Today I have a doctor appointment again for a follow up.

I do have a cat, I heard it could be a virus or infection.

Thanks again!

Hi barb,
Welcome to this forum.  How long have you had these swollen nodes?  Have you had any recent infections, colds, etc?  This is usually the cause of swollen nodes, although if they don't go away or continue to get bigger, it's a good idea to look at possible other causes.

I honestly can't answer your questions on interpreting your CT scan.   I am a lymphoma patient but not medically trained.  You might have better luck posting this question over the doctor forum.
