Cirrhosis of the liver??

Hi I am wondering if you can please help me my partner has been diagnosed with cirrhosis of the liver so they have said they want him to loose about 2 stone as he is overweight and they wont operate at the moment but want him to loose it between now and end of Jan as they want him in ASAP.   They are operating to take away part of the liver he also has a hernia but they arent bothered about that at the moment as they liver is more important.  They done  a biopsy last week.

Does anyone know what is involved in this operation and what recovery time roughly is and also what are the after effects ie diet etc?

He isn't a heavy drinker so they are not sure what has caused this he will maybe have a night out once a month and have a good drink.

Thanks in advance for any responses.

Hello and hope you are doing well.

Cirrhosis, with a biopsy done and if the biopsy is positive for evidence of carcinoma, then surgical therapy is needed. Was he diagnosed with a tumor? Recovery will then be based on the extent of spread of the tumor and his general health and co morbid conditions like diabetes.

Hope this helped and do keep us posted.

Sorry to hear of the diagnosis...  Unusual to do surgery for cirrhosis unless it is a biopsy.

If the surgery can be done through by laparoscopy (a scope), he should be up and around in a day or so.  Same for a needle biopsy.

If it is an open procedure, he'll be hurting for a week, but getting around OK in 10 days or so.  Probably no work for 3-4  weeks though.

Hope he does well.  Best of luck to you both!
