Heartburn and High GGT - Help!

I went to my doctor with the fact that I have daily heartburn which I control with over the counter medication (Xantax in the UK). She prescribed me Omeprazole which worked well. At the same time she sent me for liver function tests. I went for the results and all was fine except my GGT was 93. (I do drink regularly).

She asked me to wait 1 month and go again, which I did.

I received a letter from her today asking me to fast from midnight to 9am and then go for further tests (this time not GGT) but liver profile, FBC, Lipid profile, glucose, fe studies and Hep B&C serology. From memory these are the same tests she asked me to do when I did the first set that came back with the high GGT.

I DO NOT KNOW THE RESULTS OF MY SECOND GGT TEST and can't get hold of my doctor to ask.

Does anyone know why she would be asking me to fast and do the same tests again minus the GGT test? I am worried about what she thinks is wrong...

Thanks

I would agree with aMom21. No need to be overly concerned about why your Doc asked you to do this. My guess is that she just wants to make sure of her initial assessment and ensure that all else in the liver is doing fine. GGT readings are mainly related to alcohol intake. So if all your other readings come back fine, then you just need to go slow on the al. So no need to loose any sleep until you get your other readings ie AST, ALT and total bilirubin.

I've have had these same tests done non-fasting and fasting.  I believe the reason behind the fasting is that some of the measurements are more accurate after fasting especially glucose.  I think the docs just want the most accurate results they can get.  I would relax until you get your results.  A high GGT can be an indicator of alcohol consumption but I would pay more attention to AST and ALT.  In any case cutting out alcohol is the healthiest decision if you are concerned.
