Liver Adenoma

I'm a 36 yr. old male.

In Feb. I had an ultrasound due to slightly elevated liver functions due to taking Crestor.  The ultrasound showed a mass on my liver and an abdominal MRI was scheduled.  The MRI showed a 4.8cm mass and at that time I consulted with a GI.  Everything else on the MRI looked normal.  Regarding the liver, he said it was a "complex cyst"  saying that it wasn't just a fluid filled sac, but actually had some blood vessels attached etc.  Anyhow, he took a blood test for cancer markers (came back fine) and ordered another round of MRI and blood test in 3 months.
3 months later, my liver functions are perfectly normal (after having stopped using Crestor) and the mass on my liver was stable (no growth).  After this next round, the GI was calling it an adenoma and saying there was a 15% chance that it could become malignant and that I should consult with a surgeon.  I have scheduled an appt. with a surgeon for 7/3/12.  Also, this has been completely asymptomatic, no enlarged liver or pain at all.  If I had not went for the initial ultrasound I doubt I would have ever known...
Can they identify these things with just scanning?  The GI said they usually don't do biopsy unless absolutely necessary due to complications that could arise.  Also, adenoma seems to be very rare in men...could this be a misdiagnosis?  My greatest fear is that this is a metastases from some other cancer in my body. Should I ask my doctor for a colonoscopy and EGD?  I do have GERD so I always feel some discomfort in my stomach area, so I don't know if there might be symptoms I'm overlooking.
I'm just scared and anxious so knowing that others have went through the same thing and everything came out OK, would be good news to hear at least.

Thanks,
Chris

Hi, thanks for responding!  Both of my MRIs were of the full abdomen and the radiologist noted everything else as perfectly normal.  I did follow-up with my GI regarding any further testing and he did not feel it was necessary at this time, but to go ahead and keep my appointment with the surgeon.  Also, I'm not having any of the systemic symptoms, in fact I gained a good 10 lbs in the months since they found it due to worry!  I'm guessing if the doctor was unsure of his diagnosis he would have put me in with the surgeon immediately, so all of these things are encouraging!

Hello and hope you are doing well.

Chris, understand your predicament. Usually secondaries are multiple or more than one focus. And the lesion has not changed in size. Also, your liver functions are normal. If its a malignancy you should have systemic symptoms like fatigue and loss of appetite. And hope the MRI did not show any lymphadenopathy. But for a confirmatory diagnosis, only a biopsy can help.

Hope this helped and do keep us posted.
