Liver Pain with Normal Labs

I have stopped drinking about two months ago and noticed a dull ache in my right upper quadrant.  It sometimes moves to the left side.  Annual physicals for the past 15 years have all been normal including CBC's and liver function tests.  I have had two normal CBC's and LFT since the pain started.

Anyone else have pain issues that resolved with or without being diagnosed with liver disease or cirrhosis?

Thanks for you comments.  It looks like an ultrasound is in my future.  Oddly enough most of my pain in now in my right side.  I also just got my third straight clean labs.

I have horrible pain in my right side. Clean labs, clean CT. Doctor has said she can tell my liver is inflamed though.  I have quit drinking but the pain seems to keep getting worse. I also had my gall bladder removed 10 years ago so I know it’s not that. I hate going to the Doctor knowing something is wrong and they just say “everything looks good.”  Which has happened multiple times now. I am down to a strict diet, but I still take my non-Tylenol oxycodone for my back problems and that seems to bother it, too. Sucks!  Hopefully some day we get answers or I guess we just die.

Basically your liver doesn't feel pain, at least that's what your doctors will tell you. But some of the infrastructure in the liver, like your bile ducts, etc can become blocked and inflammed which causes pain. But this would showup in the blood work.

If you were drinking for a long period, you may have developed fatty liver which may or may not elevate your blood work. It will enlarge your liver though to various degrees. And this packaging issue may cause pain on your right side where the liver and ribcage contact each other.

And the final issue is adhesions which can pop up randomly throughout your abdomenal region.

But given the clean blood work with continued pain, I'd press your doctor to at least do an ultrasound for piece of mind. This would eliminate the enlarged liver and also the possibility of liver lesions. It's cheap and non-invasive. Take care.
