I taped the show and watched it again and I cringed. The overall tone really was negative and it was a circus. I erased it, no more watching it for me.
I didn't see the show, but I cringed when I read he was doing a "show" (and I mean a SHOW, as in a circus) about Lyme. So I'm not surprised.
Way to kill our credibility, dude. Sigh.
I agree with the model and her seizures, I have had seizures before and just remember waking up in the hospital and nothing else. It does make the doubters doubt more. It was a baby step with a lot more steps to go.
Yeah, I had a few questions left unanswered.
On the "Under our Skin" DVD, there are some extra clips of other patients. One is a boy who had episodes very similar to the model's seizure. I don't think it's exactly the same as an epileptic seizure, but then I doubt anybody has done any research on them to know for sure. The boy's mother says that doctors think her son is faking them.
On the whippits, I guess they were trying to show how desperate she was, but I remember thinking that I would spend that money on some good natural treatments, rather than a potentially brain damaging 'high'. Inhaling nitrous oxide reduces the amount of oxygen in the blood temporarily. Considering that Lyme spirochetes don't like oxygen, it seems to me that she could be making herself sicker with the whippits.
I concluded at the end of the show that they had just introduced the big picture with no specifics on what to do with it. I almost expected Dr. Phil to say, "Tune in tomorrow for more on Lyme Disease." I hope he has the model on the show again after she's been under treatment for awhile.
I'm surprised we aren't talking about this show more. What did you guys think about the model on the show who used whippets as a home treatment? I have never heard of such a thing! I also thought the seizures she had were a little strange...vocalizing and being conscious? I'm sure it happens but it's very rare, so couldn't we have picked someone who was more believable, even though she may be 100% legit?? Ugh.
My take was that it made us look like idiots bc he focused on the model using whippets to self medicate. There was no talk about Igenex, how testing is done, etc. I'm REALLY disappointed. The only positive was that he had his staffer with Lyme on there and the weather lady from San Diego. Just my take.
I was a little disappointed too. Yes it was a baby step, but Dr Phil said it in the introduction that it could be the next thing similar to the AIDS epidemic and that is true because many of us waked around with false dx for years (I did) and then came to find out we had Lyme many years later. How many people are out there thinking they have Fibromyalgia, or Chronic Fatigue but in reality it is Lyme. It is a scary thought.
I watched the show today and it was sympathetic to the 3 chronic Lyme patients featured, but they really just touched on the big issues. The topic was only half the show, so there was little time to delve into specifics. They did show a few clips from "Under Our Skin".
They had the head of Johns Hopkins Infectious Disease department via the Internet to give the standard party line... That there is no more Lyme after standard treatment, that chronic Lyme is a "label" that has been applied to people who have something else, that "at least 4 studies" have shown that long term antibiotics don't help.
I am really grateful that they covered the issue. I hope it makes more people aware of the controversy. To me, this show was 1 baby step in the right direction. I hope they run more. I would love to see Anderson Cooper tackle this issue.
thanks for the heads up, I am going away but do take notes.
Thanks for the heads up!
If you are able to take notes on the big points and post them later, that would be great... but no pressure. :)
