Why you should *NOT* be afraid of Lyme disease

Pamela Weintraub is a professional writer/reporter who, several years ago, wrote a book, 'Cure Unknown', detailing the story of her family's encounter with Lyme disease.  It is well written and explains as well as anything I have read the mess the medical and scientific communities are in when it comes to Lyme.

The main quarrel I have with Weintraub's book (now in paperback) is its title:  'Cure Unknown'.  On its face, that appears to indicate that Lyme is incurable, but that is not true.  I decided that the title is a slam against the fools in the medical community who refuse to keep up with progress that has been and continues to be made against Lyme, both in diagnosis and in treatment:  that is, the 'cure' that is 'unknown' is the cure for the stubborn blindness the bigwigs in the medical community still exhibit. Still, it is an unfortunate title because of the misunderstanding it generates and the fear it engenders among those who have Lyme.

Progress has been and continues to be made against Lyme and its co-infections.  The trick is finding an MD who keeps up with research and the medical literature.  The main voluntary group for MDs who understand Lyme and its tricks is the International Lyme and Associated Diseases Society (ILADS).  Finding an ILADS-member doctor for evaluation and testing if you think you may have Lyme disease is critical, because other MDs (often including neurologists, rheumatologists and infectious disease 'specialists') have drunk the KoolAid about Lyme being hard to get and easy to cure.

If you are not well and your MDs cannot figure out what is wrong, or if you have been diagnosed with Lyme and treated but are still not well, I would encourage you to located an ILADS-member MD for an evaluation.  I did so, and it saved me and my family from continued illness.

Be not afraid -- and let us know if you need help to find an LLMD.

Another thought:

Lyme often produces a high level of anxiety in many of its sufferers, so if you are feeling anxious, don't blame yourself -- the anxiety will go away with treatment for the underlying infections.

There are always those afraid of just life in general.

After all........Living, (life itself) has been found to be the leading cause of death.

Who would have guessed?
