I can sympathize with the heavy periods. I had periods that were unlike anything I'd ever experienced. They were heavy, full of clots and sapped my energy.
I'm sure there are all kinds of potions and lotions you can buy or have prescribed to lessen the heaviness. I chose to ride it out unless it became ridiculous. I had periods that lasted 2 weeks and I've had some that after the 3 week period of time I called my doctor and she prescribed provera to give them a nudge toward stopping.
In my case these erratic, some times heavy, some times scanty periods went on for over 5 yrs. Trust me it was a real adventure...I learned to make like a boy scout and made sure I was always prepared. My periods were so unpredictable. There were times during the trip to menopause that I'd have 2 or 3 periods in a month that would last anywhere from 3 days to 5 days each.
A lot of women have some many different symptoms that they decide hormone replacement therapy is needed to help them through it. I think I was pretty lucky that the crazy periods were basically my only symptom. I chose to ride it out until they stopped and thankfully I've been period free now for 16 months.
I'd read up on peri-menopause and all the symptoms that go along with. You can also have your doctor run a blood test to discover your hormone levels to help determine if you are beginning menopause.
Good luck

You could pick up some natural progesterone creme at the health food store. It made all the difference in the world for me.
