Menopause then Perimenopause?

I am 53 and had not had a period in 2 and a half years. Then I begain bleeding very heavily, which continued for three weeks until my doctor put me on Aygestin for 30 days. I began bleeding again during the last few days of the hormones and have continued for over 2 weeks now, even though it has slowed down considerably.
My doctors have told me that I was menopausal becasue I had not had a period in 2 and a half years. Now he is telling me that my tests show that I am still making estrogen and am perimenopausal. Can this happen? He did a uterine biopsy which was normal. Some thickening of the uterus and fibroids. I have never heard of going "backwards." He wants me to go back on the Ayestin for several months on a daily basis, but I don't want to go on hormones because my mother had breast cancer.
Has this happened to anyone else?

It's very unusual to have periods after not having them for over 2 years.   However if your biopsy  and ultrasound was normal as far as the endometrium than who knows?  Maybe you gained weight and got more estrogen in your body and the periods came back? Any possibility of that?  You may have not really been in menopause., only in perimenopause. Have they done the FSH test?  I wouldn't worry too much about Aygestin and the other progesterones, it's the estrogens that would worry me if the doctors want to give you that. I would not take estrogen or a combination pill, I also have breast cancer in my family. I have been on Aygestin, Provera, etc. and it didn't help much.  I'm considering an ablation if my periods don't stop soon...and I'm 56!

I agree with you. I have finally convinced my doctor to go ahead with the hysteroscopy. I asked him point blank how one can go into what HE told me was menopause, then all of a sudden I'm back into perimenopause just doesn't make sense. His answer was that the one year rule really doesn't hold true. I disagree. I think that when one has stopped having periods for over 2 and a half years, then there is something wrong. I was happy that the uterine biopsy was normal, but something else is going on here. The doctor did say that I have fibroids, but also said that they often "resolve themselves" and I refuse to go on any more hormones.
