General Health

My husband had a car accident in December 2011, after complaining of back pain I insisted that he go to the doctor. There was a MRI done in March 2012 with several findings inc. mild aneurysmal dilatation of an atherosclerotic abdominal aorta. Measuring up to 4.4 cm.
Could this have been caused from the accident? Could he have been saved (his doctor knew his brother had the same thing to happen 4 years ago) with surgery?

I don't think aneurysm comes from trauma, I think it is pressure from the blood on a part of a blood vessel that is thinner than the surrounding area.  Possibly trauma could increase the blood pressure, but that would be the only connection, as I understand aneurysm.
