My Semen Analysis Result... I'M SCARED!!!

Please Doc, I abstained from Sex for 1 WEEK before semen analysis at the lab... The result is as follows:

Time Produced: 3:20PM, Time Received at Lab: 3:35PM, Time Examined: 3:30PM

Volume: 3.4mls
Appearance: Creamy
Viscosity: Hyperviscous
Odour: Misty
P.H: 8.0

Motility (Active): 40%
Motility (Sluggish): 40%
Motility (Dead): 20%

Morphology (Normal): 50%
Morphology (Head Defect): 20%
Morphology (Neck Defect): 10%
Morphology (Tail Defect): 20%

Mean Progressive Motility: POOR
Total Spermatozoa count per Mil: 36 Million/ml
Total Spermatozoa count per ejaculate: 122.4 Million/Ejaculation

The following was also observed from my semen analysis:

PUS Cells: 5-6/hpf
Epithelial Cells: +
Culture Isolate: Yielded moderate growth of "Staphylococcus spp" after 48 hours of incubation at 37 degrees C.

1. My wife and I have been trying to get pregnant for 5 months. Firstly, does my semen being "Hyperviscous" mean that I can't get my wife pregnant?

2. What does PUS Cells being 5-6/hpf mean?

3. What does Epithelial Cells being "+" mean?

4. What do they mean by Culture Isolate yielded moderate growth of "Staphylococcus spp" and is that a serious disease?

5. What is your opinion of my Semen Analysis?

Thank you very much in an anticipation Doc. I will really appreciate your helpful opinion before I see a doctor.

I can't thank you enough for your reply to my post. I have booked an appointment to see a doctor on 26th July and will post the outcome up here. Meanwhile, I tried to talk with a friend who happens to be a medical lab attendant and has experience in these issues, and he told me that the infection could most likely be the reason for my low motility and he's sure that once treated would improve my next semen analysis.

I'm not relying on that until I can talk with a specialist doctor one on one.

Thanks Solace.

Hi,
As told already, you should get your report examined by your doctor only. However based on my general information I thougt I would be able to help you to some extent.
In the first place, five months is too short a period for you to get worried. I would think that six months to one year will be a typical period for conceiving a baby, even though under ideal conditions, an accidental contact is all that is necessary. Inspite of high factor of safety that Nature has degined into the number of sperm counts, many times they fail to impregnate the egg. So you have no reason to worry.

Next you should leave the first and the last weeks in the one month period between menstrual periods and engage in sex only during the middle two weeks period, as the ovulation takes place during this time.

Thirdly leave all anxiety away and relax, the results will follow.

As regards your Semen test report, to me things look generally bright. You have a sperm count of 122 million per ejaculate which I think is a nice number, remeber, you need only one sperm to reach and fuse with the egg.
Of some worry is the high percentage (50%) of defective sperm, and poor progressive motility. I hope your doctor will specify some medicine for that. You can also take Zinc rich food which will help to improve the health of the sperms. The pus cells and staph bacteria may indicate some infection as already discussed above, though staph.spp I believe is not a troble maker and your doctor may feel the pus count is not high enough to indicate an infection. In any case an infection is diagnosed, you may have to test your wife also for possible infection and both should take medication at the same time, or if your wife does not have any infection, you should abstain  during the period of treatment.

Finally I only want to say that you have no need for worry, and you should get the proper diagnosis from your doctor and follow his advice. I wouuld be interested to learn your doctor's views on the report. Also, since you are any how doing these tests, may be you should get similar tests done for your wife from a gynec., so that you do not lose time and in that process, lose your confidence.

Sorry, I do not.  Your best bet really is to let the doctor walk you through the whole list.

Thanks AnnieBrooke. Do you know about PUS Cells being 5-6/hpf ? Do you know what that means?

Take all these questions to the doctor.  Staphylococcus is an infection, probably necessitating a round of antibiotics.
