Red bumps on your cheeks often result in embarrassment, as well as concerns for your health. While some bumps aren't serious and will fade without treatment, others may lead to permanent scarring, reports MayoClinic.com. Recognize the likely causes of red bumps on your cheeks to know when you should contact your doctor.
Significance
Red bumps on your cheeks may signal acne, sometimes referred to as pimples or zits, and can result in scarring if left untreated. Acne also forms on the neck, chest, shoulders or back -- the areas of your body with the most oil glands. Acne bumps often heal slowly and new bumps typically appear as the older ones vanish, according to MayoClinic.com. Your risk is highest for acne if you are a teenager, although women often face a high likelihood of the bumps due to hormonal changes linked with menstrual cycles, birth control pills and pregnancy. Red bumps on the cheeks or other parts of your body that fade and then reappear in different sizes often signal hives, or urticaria, says KidsHealth.org. Hives usually resolve without treatment and don't leave markings on your cheeks. You face the greatest likelihood for hives if you have a family history of the condition or have regular allergic reactions.
