I sometimes get severe migraines as well and the only two things that have helped me are massage therapy and a medication called Relpax. Relpax is more expensive than some of the other migraine medications, but the other medications, including painkillers, do nothing for me.

She's had these symptoms since she was 14, they just were not so often...
She said that her first period caused the headaches..
Both grandmothers have headaches.. thats our history :)
Her allergies are seafood, but very minimal... she just gets rashes.. nothing serious..

She's seen Accupuncture and homeopath... neither worked for her..
No imaging scans done.. at all..

Hope this helps...
THank you so much

Hi,

Has this went on for years?
Any event that seemed to have started her symptoms?
Any history of migraines in her side of the family?
Any allergies?

Tai Chi can be very relaxing and may also help in breathing regulation.Have you tried seeing an alternative medicine specialist?

Any imaging scans done?

Best,

Hi,

How is your mom?

She seems to have a chronic bout of headaches. This has started since she was a teenager, you say?

Has your mom discussed abortive therapy for migraine with her physician? Analgesics may not be migraine specific.Other medications like triptans and ergotamine may be more effective. These may entail some side effects however, with usage.

Watch out for any changes in the headache's character. If it rapidly progresss in severity, if it causes numbness, vomiting, weakness, doubling of vision and imbalance then further evaluation might be needed.

Keep in touch!

I'm with Mom/Angel, welcome to the headache club.  You say your mom has headaches about twice a month.  I don't know if your a boy or girl so sorry if you are a boy - when your a women it is VERY common to get a migraine at ovulation and at menses (your period).

We are talking the worst of all Migraines with SEVERE pain lasting for approximately 3-4 days each for me.  You can find out within two months just by having her keep a journal.  If you have a little money, you can go buy an ovulation kit and she can find out pretty fast.  Now, a lot of people woudl say stop the tea.  Tea can be a big migraine trigger but if she is drinking it every day and is OK for days to come, then that probably isn't it.  Also, if you are old enough to speak this well on the net - how old is she.  Ages 30's to 40's can be the worse because perimenopause sets in.

Tea all day - has she been to a cardiologist - depending on the tea - caffeine all day will give you serious heart palpitations.  Do you ever drink decaffinated tea?  You are a tea expert compared to me - are the tea leaves aged - if so they will also contain tyramine that can cause severe headaches.

Of course, check with the doctor - headaches this bad need to be seen by a neurologist - there are medicines out there that can really help.  More details would really help but if the doc says OK, even stretching will help with circulation.  Starting to excercise is SO hard when you don't feel well.  Does she watch television often - if so, just stretching during commercial breaks is a great way to get started.  My daughter hates to clean - so I let her do "commercial cleaning".  Pretty soon, half the house is sparkling.  We do have a lot of commercials on TV in the US.  Take care.

These headache's occur very often...
She usually has them for about 3 days...
The bright lights and food dont really aggravate her...
No history of cancer in the family.. my father had a anurism (can't spell that)
She has low blood pressure and is not diabetic.
She never vomits after eating.. although when she has a bad headache, she gets nautious.. and vomits.. but it's usually just small.. like spit....

She is on one medication but it doesnt seem to help much, and costs a fortune...

She has had these headaches for a really long time ....many years... The problem is, my mother can't do excersises, because she has heart palps.. so this doesnt do justice... maybe some tai chi???
She drinks tea alot... we're polish, so tea is a everyday all day thing... :)

Thanks so much

Hi,

Do the headaches occur very often?
Is the headache worst when the patient wakes up in the morning?
Any condition that aggravates the headache like loud noises, bright lights certain food?
Any history of cancer or stroke in the family?
Is your mother hypertensive ( high blood pressure?)Diabetic?
is vomiting associated with meals? Does she usually vomit immediately after eating?
Is this forceful or projectile vomiting ( the vomitus is projected quite forcefully)?

There are several migraine medications in the market that covers most of the symptoms associated with migraine including nausea and vomiting.

You might want to talk to your mom.Headaches and migraines may be due to hormonal changes and may also be stress related.Encourage your mom to do frequent exercises .I suggest you introduce her to a new hobby or sport that would deviate her focus from her headaches.A cold compress over the head, relaxation exercises, taking tea or listening to soothing music may help.

I hope this helps.

I know exactly how you feel.... If you read my other post, you'll see how bad mine get.. The only thing I can do is lay down in quiet with a cool wash cloth on my neck .... Nothing really helps me... And no doc. wants to hear or believe my symptoms when I tell them what is going on.... Your mom should go to a specialist......hope she feel's better.
