Blighted Ovum

I'll be eight weeks pregnant on Friday and had my first
ultrasound yesterday and my Dr told me I had
a blighted ovum. I feel like she rushed doing the
ultrasound and didn't look to see if maybe there
was another sac. She did draw blood to check
my levels. I'm waiting on those results. She told me its probably because if my
age the it's probably an old egg. I've read that sometimes
These are misdiagnosed. I was just wondering if
any one went through this and if it ended up
being a good pregnancy.

Im sorry your going through with this. And i prayed for the lady you met in the hospital.I too got bligthed ovum last year, @9 weeks i terminated my pregnancy as the doctor says there is no hope. My HCG is also going down so they perform D/C . This month i found im pregnant, 4 days before my period i took HPT  and all 3 HPT are positive. On Feb 10 i had a severe abdominal pain that i cant explain lasted for 30 minutes. When i went to ER, i  had U/S and found only sac no Featlpole nor yolksac. Technician says its too early to see after all i forget when i have my last period...i learned God has His own time for all of us.... dont loose hope.. God will provide.

I wanted to share this with you ladies.  I believe that God has spared me each time I miscarried. I never got to the point of seeing the baby or heartbeat.  I found out to day about a young lady in my community who thought she was 16 or 17 weeks pregnant. She went for her first ultra sound at like 12 weeks and they saw the baby at 14 weeks they heard the heart beat.  Well, yesterday her and her family with to the 4d ultrasound to find out the sex, and they couldn't find a heartbeat. She was sent to the E/R this morning and found out that she was pregnant for twins and that one died at like 13 weeks and the other died at 14 weeks. My heart goes out to this couple.  She is in the hospital and is having a very risky procedure that takes 3 days.  Please keep them in your prayers. I believe God knew that I wouldn't be able to handle something like this. Thanks again for all of your concerns and stories. I really like this website.

I was checked for Lupus and that came back normal.I'm not sure about the 3 FSH and estradiol testing. I go back to her on Thursday. I will inquire about that. I'm not giving up yet either. Good Luck to you as well Rachel. Thanks for the advice.

Hello Danirv

I am so sorry for your 3 losses, It's so heart breaking and painful. I sadly had to experience 2 miscarriages, both of them were missed miscarriages ( Silent miscarriage). I only found out on my scan that my babies had no heart beat and it shatters your heart and with each miscarriage, it's harder to pick urself up and be positive.

Have you had any testing done? I have had quite a few tests carried out, but had to pay for them all privately as they only test after 3 in a row. My Karyotype was normal, but seems I have tested positive for Lupus ( blood clotting disorder, there are no real signs of this and would never of known I had this, so lucky I did the test. The blood clots in the placenta, so this can cause miscarriages, so get this checked if u haven't already :-)

( Treatment is mainly asprin or heparin - injections)

In regards to having old eggs, it depends on the women, there are some many womens in there late 30's and 40's having children, so it depends on the woman. You can have the day 3 FSH and estradiol testing -ovarian reserve on egg quantity and quality issues. This would be a good test in regards to egg quality.

I am scared to face another miscarriage am 31 years old and really want a baby, but i suppose I will have to wait and see what happens on my 3rd attempt. Life can be so harsh sometimes, but i don't want to give up just yet. I will try at least 4-5 times, and then i would maybe have IVF or adopt.

Time will tell. I wish you luck and blessings.

Rachel x x

Thanks so much.  I go back to the doctor Wednesday.  The Clinic called me and said my levels are still high so the Dr. wants to talk about the next step and if I want to take the meds again to abort the baby. I'm so frustrated because I had to ask if they were going to check my blood again. She told me yeah they will.  For my peace of mind, i just want to see that the levels dropped and also want one more ultrasound just to confirm before I make a decision. I'm not happy with my new doctor. I feel no compassion especially that this is my 3rd miscarriage.  I had to switch doctors because my doctor doesn't deliver anymore.  I will be going to see a fertility specialist after my second regular cycle.  The hardest thing is when you are still having symptoms of being pregnant and no signs of miscarriage. I have no cramping or spotting. I am staying positive for the future that I will have my little baby. Have a great day.

Hi, I went through this in march last year, unfortunately I did end up with a blighted ovum but dont give up yet, lots can happen in the early stages. I was initially diagnosed at 7wks, we waited 2 weeks to see if there was any change, unfortunately there was not enough so I had a d&c as there was no sign of a natural miscarriage coming anytime soon.
I would recommend waiting at least 1week, 2 if you can, and have another ultrasound, your dates might be off so those extra days can mean a world of difference.
Its a difficult position to be in and I'm so sorry that you have to experience this but definitely see if you can have another ultrasound.
Blighted ovum is generally a chromosome issue, either too many or not enough, from what I have read there is little reason to believe its due to your age or an old egg.
Try to think positive but also be prepared for the worst.
Best of luck over the next few days/weeks :)
