How Soon After a Miscarriage is it Safe to Try Again

I have heard that it is not safe to get pregnant right after a miscarriage because it can increase your chances of a repeat miscarriage. Has anyone heard this from their doctor or has anyone heard this is not true? My doctor's office will not do another IUI until I get my 2nd period but I was wondering if I should be using birth control this month to try to prevent myself from getting pregnant. I want to get pregnant again ASAP but I never want to go through another miscarriage. I am also tempted to try again on our own after the 1st period, but am not sure if that is still too soon. Any advice on this is welcome. Thanks!

You are going to want to go by what your Dr. tells you since they will know more about your M/C then anyone. I had a D&C 6 weeks ago and my Dr. said he wanted me to get one period before TTC again so that my body will be back to "normal", give it time to heal before putting it through stress again, we also know through testing that the reason that pregnancy did not work out was because of a chromosomal abnormality and not because of anything wrong with me. So since he doesnt think there is anything wrong with me and does not think we need to do anymore testing he said get one period and then TTC. I listended to him since he is the expert. You can get pregnancy right after having a M/C and for many women the pregnancy goes well but for some it does not, and it is hard to know if they had waited a cycle if it would have been OK or if it was also from chrom. abnormality (cause of about 60% of M/C). Good luck!!

I have been hearing that more doctors are saying it is ok to try right away. I have a follow up appointment Weds and I will see what my doctor says. I might just wait until my first af no matter what just to be safe. If I got pregnant right away and it ended in another m/c I would probably really blame myself for not waiting so it is probably better that I don't risk it. Good luck to you.

i had a M/C 3 week ago i was 12 wk, the hospital told me to try right away once the bleeding had sopped as i heard that u have to wait. i also went to the docs to ask them and they said the same thing. they told me that u are mor fertile when u have m/c. they also said that no 2 pregnancys are the same and that if u miscary ad then try right away doesnt mean that u will miscarry againg or ur chances are higher of another miscarry. good luck :)

Thanks both of you for your input. I will wait until my next IUI even though the waiting is tough. I tried 13 months before finally getting my bfp and I am still getting over having that excitement of the bfp crushed so quickly. It just makes me want to get another bfp ASAP but I don't want to risk it if my body isn't ready yet.

My doctor did tell me there is a risk of another miscarriage unless you have had a full, normal cycle, and that most doctors will tell you two full, normal cycles because they want to be sure the timing (the 28 days) is also a normal time lapse like you had before the loss.  They want to be sure the uterine lining, that was affected by the miscarriage, is entirely functioning as usual, building up and sloughing off, and then building up again at the right time.  I wouldn't try again on my own until I am certain that the next period (that came and went after the period that came with the miscarriage) was entirely as normal.

when i had my missed miscarriage and my d/c my dr made me wait one full cycle and then i got preggo right away. from what i have read is that most early miscarriage is usually from something being abnormal with the baby. And getting preggo right away doesn't have anything to do with weather or not your going to miscarry again. I have heard that after a miscarriage you are actually more fertile. I think waiting a bit lets you heal emotionally and if you had a d/c lets your insides heal from the surgery.
