performimg a d&c

I have a question, I had a miscarriage on Jan. 15th and they performed a d&c on Jan. 16th.   I was only 8 1/2 weeks along.  I had went and seen 2 other  OBGYN since then and they both were inquiring why a HCG level test was not performed before they did the D&c. Does anyone know if it is common to have that done before performing a d&c??

Nikki-

I was 17 weeks along and I still had the option of having a D&C.  They cannot make you have one.  In my opinion, I think a D&C can help to avoid some infections that take place during a natural miscarriage.  My doctor said he has seen more infections with natural miscarriages than he has with D&C procedures.  He also told me I would bleed and pass large clots if I went natural.  With the D&C my levels dropped a lot faster and I stopped bleeding after a couple of weeks.  My period came exactly 5 weeks after my D&C procedure.  It would have been longer without it and DH and I wanted to get my body back on schedule so we could start trying again.  I think a D&C is a personal decision.  I asked a lot of questions and made my decision based in the information I was given.  I just dont think I could have handled passing clots and seeing my baby in the toilet everyday.  This was much easier for me to understand and cope with.

As for your HCG levels...I am sure when you went to the office for your visit where they determined you were miscarrying they had you pee into a cup.  They checked my levels everytime I went to the office so if you gave a urine sample they probably checked.
