Steroid side effects

I saw my neuro today and he suspects the start of on, since I'm having lots of pain in my eye. He put me on a burst of 5 day steroid treatment...25, 20, 15, etc. Problem is that I took the 25 and for about 7 hours had hot flashes, shaking, heart pounding...just miserable. I'm thinking of stopping it right now. I'm more miserable than just dealing with the eye pain. Any suggestions?

I thought oral steroids were worse for ON???  I could be wrong, but I thought the best treatment was IV steroids or nothing.

Thank you. Funny, but solu-medrol didn't affect me this badly. Had it in hospital last fall. I saw the nurse coming and would just stick out my arm.

Hi Willowwoman7,

I took 1000 mg of Solu-Medrol (steroid) for 6 days for my Optic Neuritis and ONI. My symptoms did not improve until day 10 and the condition did not stop until day 12. I've heard that ON "normally" lasts for 15 days to 6 weeks. I'm not sure about the normal course of ONI, but I still have a very slight amount of Nystagma that is fading day by day.

The side effects were horrible, but I found ways to alleviate some of them. If you are having serious side effects, you should discuss it with your GP. There may be another steroid available with less side effects or your GP may have another medication to give you to ease the side effects. Remember, it's only 5 days; you can do it!
