A huge sigh of relief!

Saw the hematologist/oncologist this afternoon and although he thinks my neuro referred me and my neuro says he just asked this specialist a question, I did get my appointment.

He does not think I will need to have a bone marrow biopsy and while he stated he does not normally diagnose without doing his own blood tests in his fancy lab, he feels that I do have a bleeding disorder called ITP.

It is quite common and usually auto-immune so I can easily make that leap myself. He had some blood drawn and said unless I hear back from him I am good to go as long as my platelets do not drop any lower than they are now.

He was very nice and explained what they would look for with the tests and  explained what would need to be done if it ever got any worse and it dies not always worsen.

Thank you everyone for all of your support,

Corrue

So happy to read you don't have to go through with the bone marrow biopsy!

Thanks everyone! It is still a bit surreal for me because my platelet count has been normal for at least 2 years that I know of albeit on the low end of the range but he seemed to know what he was talking about.

According to him my bone marrow was healthy because of the giant platelets and that meant my ITP was compensated.

Since my platelets are normal I amnot anticipating any future problems. Lord knows I have blood work regularly enough that it will be well monitored! :-)

DV, I thank you for sharing your mother's success story. It is good to know that if I do run into trouble that it can still have a good outcome.

I'm glad no bone marrow biopsy for you. I had one a couple of yrs ago...and, obviously, they're not fun. I hope they can get it all figured out.

Phew! I mean, it's not nothing, but as Alex says it seems like it will be manageable. It sounds like you had a good medical team on the case. I'm so sorry you have another thing to contend with, but at least now it's the known rather than the last few days of the unknown.

My mother has ITP. Her platelets got extremely low several years ago and after being diagnosed she was put on prednisone, for several months I think. She slowly weaned off of it and has never had a recurrence of low platelets. In the meantime she's had cardiac bypass surgery and was fine.
