Bothering a Doctor?

Is it a bad thing to read the warnings on medications a doctor prescriptions and let the doctor know if you have concerns?

Or should I just take the medication and see what happens?

Maybe I worry too much?

Hi Heather,
I have not been on that board.  I will go and check it out.

I am doing SO much better than I was in past years. As I have gotten older things have calmed down.  I am not so uptight.

I do have problems with tachycardia and am on a beta-blocker.  That has really helped with the anxiety issues too.  But I could still use more help.  From what I understand my mom had the same type of problems.

I thought anxiety was a state of mind but am wondering if it there is a genetic predisposition towards the problem.

Both of my adult daughter's are having problems with anxiety now. :(  I am also wondering if it is hormonal.

Have you visited the Anxiety Forum?  There are some great folks over there that know what you are going through with the panic.  So do I.  I suffered for a long time, before I finally overcame it through therapy, medication and lots of hard work.

Anxiety and panic CAN be overcome.  I swear to you, it's true.

Big Hugs,
Heather

SL- The doctor is not in today but I do think she will be willing to give me the anxiety medication.  So far she has done all she can to help me.  She will get back with me tomorrow.  Anxiety/panic attacks is scary.  It has been a monkey on my back for 25 years now.

CJ- I think maybe I should not read these inserts! ;-o   I have only had a bad reaction to one medication.  The horrible thing is the medication was actually helping with my pain but my heart was crazy.  It did end up being pulled from the market.  Scary.

Heather - Thanks Heather.  I always feel like I am bothering someone.  But I am lucky enough to have at least two doctors who are interested in listening to me.  Thanks!

Those phamplets they give out with prescriptions, stating the possible side-effects are they way to keep the patient informed about the drug they are being prescribed.

I would never feel like I am "bothering" a doctor, by calling them and saying I am worried about "this side-effect or that side-effect."  If it concerns you...you are the patient taking the drug...voice your concerns.

Never feel like you are bothering a doctor.  You are the patient and it's your body that you are putting that medication in.  If you have a concern, then consider it a valid concern.

I always read the labels on medicines and find most of them can cause the problem they are given to me for , as above i think its just to cover the pharmacutical companies, the 'just incase we get sued syndrome'
have a great day

Did she say she'd give you something if it kicked up the anxiety? I'm so glad she called you back, and hope she realizes how scary this actually is.

It wouldn't be so scary if anxiety wasn't so durn horrifying and uncontrollable.

Good for you LA.  You absolutely did the right thing "for YOU."

Way to go girl!

Thanks everyone.  My doctor's nurse called me this morning.  The doctor is not in today.

I told the nurse I was concerned about the panic/anxiety issues and said maybe I need something else to go along with the Cymbalta to keep the anxiety under control.

I know, I have not even tried the medication yet.  I will.  I just want to have something available IF I need it for a panic attack.

To be honest I really need some treatment for anxiety and panic and some mild OCD stuff.  I have struggled a great deal with all 3.  To the point it has affected my life.

I am really ready to get some help.

I did not bring any of this up with the MS doctor before my diagnosis because I did not want it to influence her on the MS issue.

I realize now that it would not have made a difference.  But after having been told I was having problems because I was stressed, well, it made it much more difficult to share this piece of information.

I get tired of feeling anxious about things.  I have been afraid to be left alone.  I have had irrational fears and thoughts.

I was taken to the E.R. by ambulance twice many years ago because of anxiety. Went through a heart work up both times.

I guess I do not appear anxious.  My insides feel like a bunch of busy ants!  Well, until I started on Trileptal.  That has helped a great deal.

I've called drs before when medications have said on the labels not to take then if you are allergic to something that I am allergic to.  They told me to take it anyway, I did and was shocked that nothing bad happened:o).  Drug companies have to list every single possible side effect that they know about for liability issues. Soemtimes the risks are pretty remote.  You and your dr have to weigh the potiential risks against the possible benefits.  If I have any concerned bout anything drug related, I call my pharmacist and ask her what she thinks first. Most often, she is able to reassure me, but there have been times when she's talked to drs for me about medication changes because of a serious problem/risk.

Best of luck to you:o).

Hey Girl -

I do the same durn thing.  So, if it is eating at you, go ahead and call the Doc and tell him/her your fears.  It's okay, you'll feel like **** for doing it, but do it anyway, you'll be glad you did.  Be sure to listen to what they have to say about it though.

I do think though ma'am (don't get mad at me) that w/what you have going on, you will absolutely know if it makes you worse.  It may make you start to feel better though honey, really, it may.

It may not cause you these problems you've read about, really it might not.  It's good that the probs are reported on, but sometimes it plays on people like us that "think we know exactly what is going to happen" if we take it! LOL...... I can say this because I know it's true for me -- you've got to give this a bit of trust.  And, just say a little prayer that it works well, and works soon!!! Okay?  It's okay to ask for immediate results from the powers that be - really it is! I promise,

ttys,
SL

Okay.....................I know...............  I was going to apologize to my doctor for bugging her.

I can not take a medication that I already know is going to cause me problems.  I already have problems with panic attacks and anxiety.  What I am reading about Cymbalta does not sound very promising for me.

I have 5 young children to take care of. I can't be hauled away!!! :-)
