I'm glad you found the link helpful! I looked into this myself when I was in the process of choosing my very first DMD. In the MS community, it's typically linked with Copaxone usage. This may be changing, however, as that drug is now usually prescribed in a newer 3x/week formulation instead of the older daily formulation.
My understanding is lipoatrophy it is a potential side effect whenever there is repeated trauma (such as needle puncture) to a certain area. Insulin dependent diabetics can encounter it too, for example. I'm sure there are other causes, and typically it's a benign presentation in and of itself. Hopefully your doctor will be able to give you more information and provide some relief for you!
you're amazing! those pictures are exactly what my thigh looks like. I have sharp pain in areas around that indentation on occasion. When I walk forward and extend my thigh there is a acute pulling sensation with some burring. otherwise it aches ALLLLLLL the time and hurts to sit on that side of my body. when resting on my back it doesn't bother me.
those pictures, though. going to see my dr this week and will bring it up. interestingly, I ache from lower back, through my bum around my hip and down into my thigh - sometimes into my knee. all on the right side.
what the heck. If I find out anything about my particular situation I'll be sure to post it.
This isn't my area of expertise (and I'm not a medical professional), but have you ever looked into this? Lipoatrophia semicircularis?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lipoatrophia_semicircularis
It probably won't provide many answers as it just means semicircular fat loss of unknown origin, but as it specifically mentions the thigh area in a way you describes and suggests some groups of people thought to be more susceptible, I thought you might find it interesting. The photographs that show up on google are also just as you describe.
Hi to you and all the others with a dent in their leg. I have a similar dent as you describe that appeared out of nowhere this december. I'm guessing mid December. It's 4 inches long, perhaps 1 inch wide.
It wraps around my upper right thigh. At first I thought it might be cellulite but It doesn't look like cellulite at all. It is smooth.
Please let me know if you find out what this is.
My daughter has the same issue in her left hip. Xraays showed her bone stopped growing on that side. We are going to a special Dr just in congenital issues. Hope they know cause she is out of some classes inschool and her future dream of military training is not looking good.
I know this is an old thread but I discovered it when searching "hole in leg". I too have a large hole in my upper thigh. I'm hoping it's caused by the Copaxone but the worrier in me is worried its some kind of muscle wasting disease! It's pretty big, about the size of a teaspoon. Any ideas? Thanks.
