You make an important point here. Being proactive can make a huge difference in how you are handled in the health care sytem. Sitting back and waiting to be contacted for tests, appts, etc. is not good idea if you want prompt attention. It is way too easy to fall between the cracks, and ultimately only you will be the one to put your needs first. It's amazing how things speed up when you take charge of the situation. This also results in a greater sense of control over your situation, which is beneficial when experiencing a health crisis as you may be feeling like you've lost all control.
Though the health care system here in Canada is very different from the US, the same principle applies. I have no doubt I would have waited weeks, maybe months longer for MRIs and neuro appts if I wasn't calling regularly to get things moving. In the process, one can develop a friendly relationship with the people booking those appts, and that can serve you well in the long run as they will remember you and often go out of their way for you.
Suzy, on the chance that the neuro has a cancellation before April 19th, maybe ask if they mind if you check in on a weekly basis. This makes it that much easier for them to fill that vacancy without having to track you or other patients down.
Good luck at your neuro appt. Make sure you bring a list of all your questions and concerns and someone to support you as well. Sometimes we forget to ask the questions and our support person can remind you. Don't let them rush you, get your questions answered and I will pray they are one of the good guys:)
