vitamin D supplements? How Much?

HI Everyone .. I am newly dx with MS so got my Vitamin D Blood test and found it to be 70nmol/L. This level was while taking 1000units a day for a year.

I have heard that us MS'ers should have a level of around 200nmol/L so I considering increasing my vit d supplements to 5000units/day.

Does anyone know how long it will take to raise levels from 70 - 200?

Also, has anyone experienced constipation on high dosages of vitamin d (ie, over 5000units per day)? and if so, what do you do to get rid of constipation?

Thanks gang!!!!

Ditto to all three comments.  Ask doc; that's why they make the big bucks.

I've recently been told I'm low on D, but I think I've reacted to the multivitamins I added, so I am holding off a few more days before I restart the D, just to be sure that's not what gave me the horrible itch.

I am on 2000 units a day. My vitamin D was depleted at one point and they put me on the high dose 50,000 units a week. Dr gave me prescription for them and I was on that for a couple of months, when it was back in normal range she has kepts me on 2000 units daily.

I like to get sun when I can to make natural vitamin D but this time of year, well at least lately, there hasn't been much sun my way.

I would speak with your dr about how much he/she reccomends before you go out and start taking more than you need.

Good luck,
Paula

High doses of vitamin D can cause of magnesium deficiency as the body uses magnesium to convert vitamin D to active vitamin D. If you are eating a diet high in magnesium you won't have issues. If you aren't...well hello magnesium deficiency symptoms. :) This can be anything from muscle twitches to constipation...the list of magnesium deficiency symptoms is ridiculously long.
