I can't figure this one out....and I am a veteran

Good afternoon, ladies and gents,

I have been diagnosed with MS for over a decade and I have been asked a question by my daughter that I cannot answer.  Have even tried to find it on the Internet, cannot find anything, so I come to the experts.

As many of you know, my 34 yr. old daughter has recently been diagnosed with MS.  Her first introduction to MS, came with a three day course of Solumedrol and all the bad side effects that come with it; because of Optic Neuritis.  All that done and slightly improved, she was told yesterday by her Opthalmologist that she now has O.N. in the other eye.

Have any of you ever heard of this happening with both eyes in a matter of weeks, almost three weeks after a full Solu treatment?  I am at a loss here.  I don't know what to tell my daughter.

Gosh I feel dumb...

Thanks so much,
Heather

Thanks for letting me know that this happened to someone else.

My daughter Cheryl, has a horrible time with the Solumedrol.  Her blood glucose levels went in the high 400's and her blood pressure shot through the roof.  These are the same problems I have with Solumedrol.  Diabetics have a hard time with Solumedrol and it seems that insulin or diabetic pills, cannot work hard enough to get high blood sugar levels down.  Here where we live in Virginia, they will not do a treatment, if your blood sugar level is about 200.

This is a good drug, but very hard on someone that is prone to high blood pressure and high blood sugar.  Her first treatment with Solumedrol, did not seem to work for her, as well as it did for me.  My Optic Neuritis (abbreviated- O.N.) was totally gone in 2 weeks.  She said her one eye never really went back to normal.  Now the other eye starts.

Since the beginning of her attack, she has not been in remission yet.  This is a long first attack.  I pray for a remission.  I don't know what I would do with the news that she is progressive already at only age 34.  It would be devastating news.  I haven't told her that, but I have hinted around, that what we want to see now, is a remission of symptoms.

She has an appointment with her Neurologist on Friday and I am sure they will talk about the Disease Modifying Drugs then.  (DMD's for the new comers to the Forum.) One thing about all of this, I have little time to worry about my MS, when all I can think about is her and what she is going through.  I pray she does not have the 24 hour pain that I do.  Lord how I pray.  I wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy....well maybe my step-mother.  Oh gosh, Heather, that's ugly to say.  I guess you would have to know how evil my step-mother is, to understand what I mean.  She is not the typical step-mother....she truly is evil.

Thanks again Debs.  The information really helped.

Big Hugs sweetheart,
Heather

Hi Heather,

Yes I have heard of it.  My friend in the UK who has Chronic now - but many years ago was R&R, she ON in the left eye, had the IV, then a few weeks later - not sure how many, I'll have to call here and ask - she then had it in the right eye.  So she had another IV, with that it was all clear for her.

Maybe this information you can pass over to Cheryl???

Hope this helps??

If you want I can call my friend in the UK and get more details, just drop me a note.

Take care,

Debs

Hi Heather,
I'll channel Quix here and say what she has repeated to me over and over - if solumedrol cured MS or prevented symptoms, it would be a standard treatment for all of us.  It doesn't work that way.

The sm only helps to ease the effects of the sxs but does not stop them.  With ON, you can wait it out or take the solu - you will still end up with the same end results.  It just takes longer on your own without the solumedrol.

I hope that makes sense and I did my mentor Quix proud!

I'm sorry your daughter is having such difficulties right now - I was hoping it would quiet down a bit for her.

be well,
Lulu
