blurred vision that goes away temporarily

My 9 year old son, who has been diagnosed with pediatric MS, has blurred vision for over 48 hours.  A couple of times his eyesight returned back to normal but then it got blurry again.  The MS specialized opthamologist said that he did not see any inflammation.   We did an MRI and it also came back clear.  What else could be going on?

Have they considered DED (dry eye disease)?  Dry eyes cause visual problems that can vary in severity from day to day or even within the same day.  Dry eye can be associated with inflammation and an overabundance of t-cells on the eye's surface - a state that is common for people with autoimmune diseases like MS.

DED can be uncomfortable (feel scratchy or like something is in the eye) - but it isn’t always.  I told my ophthalmologist I had visual fluctuations (blurriness and ghosted images) for years.  He'd ask if I had any problem with dry eye.  I said no because I didn't have to use moisture drops very often.  He didn’t actually look for it himself.  Last year I went to a highly recommended optometrist.  He used a simple dye test to determine my tear layer was evaporating away too fast.  He started me on Restasis and my vision was much more stabile within weeks.

It might be worth checking out.  Maybe a high quality OTC wetting drop would even help some.  I’m including a link you can copy and paste for a better explanation of DED.

Thanks for your responses.

The MRI showed that it was not optic neuritis.  We also saw an opthamologist that specializes in MS and he too didn't think it was MS related.  There was no inflammation in the eyes.  He said it could be migraines.

I had never heard of DED.  I'll have the eye doctor test for that.

Thanks so much!!!

hello i am 23 and was diagnosed with MS five years ago but about a year before i was diagnosed  i was pregnate for the first time and woke up one morning completely blind in my left eye it stayed like that for two weeks and then slowly got better nobody could find anything wrong with my eyes until a year later when i seen my first neurologist he ran a test and said that i also had optic neuritis. Optic neuritis is inflammation of the optic nerve. It may cause sudden, reduced vision in the affected eye. still my eyes go blurry here and there not comletely blind but blurred vision at random for various amounts of time. i don't no if this is of any help but i wish you all the luck in the world !!
