MS & Illnesses

Even though I'm in limbo with no diagnosis yet, I was wondering how your body reacts when you get sick with viruses, etc.  We have had some flu like virus go through our office, my youngest has it, and I think I'm getting it.  I don't normally get sick but when I do it's no fun.  Now that I think I'm coming down with this, I am starting to feel the way I did at the beginning of all my symptoms.

Here's my question: When you get sick with any type of infections do you always feel worse than 'normal' people & do your MS symptoms come back?

I hope this makes sense because I'm exhausted & not thinking clearly right now.

Thanks.

I am nowhere as sick as the rest of my coworkers have been, I just feel my other symptoms coming back, I feel run down, & now my legs have that tingly/numb feeling again & I don't think that is a good sign.

I wish I could stay away from the illnesses that this season brings, but working in an internal med office makes that impossible. I did get my flu shot this year so hopefully it will work. I am working on my diet, taking my vitamins, & planning on joining a gym next month so I can start exercising.

Hi Amanda - Welcome to little group :-)

As Ess said some MS docs are pro flu shot and some are anti. Because I am a Tysabri user my doc is anti. I do everything I can to make sure I'm able to ward off winter bugs. Mostly that means I eat right, get regular exercise and take my vitamins. So Far, so good :-)

Hi and welcome. Yes, illnesses, including the garden variety colds and flu, are definitely not good for MSers. They stimulate the immune system, and may also stimulate what's wrong with our central nervous systems in the process. That can mean worse ongoing symptoms or a new relapse.

The big majority of MS doctors urge their patients to get flu shots because of this, though a few discourage it. We can't always help what we catch, but we can do our best to stay out of harm's way. Some problems might be avoidable, so let's do our best to avoid them. At least that's my take on this.

I hope you soon feel much better.

Many times not always MSers get sicker. Any rise in body temperature can effect MS symptoms, i.e. make them worse. On the other side some of us get less colds, etc. because our immune systems are working overtime. I actually get over colds faster than my friends.
