I just got back from Sacramento, where it was 102, 105, 103, etc. Although I bought a case of cold water, always had a cooler with ice & water in the car, and a bottle of water near or in my hand, drinking lots of it, a car with a great air conditioner, I found out that my body really doesn't like heat any more.
Getting there was smooth, the flight, getting the shuttle to the car rental place, where the car was close and had a great air conditioner. We had some trouble with directions to our hotel, and ended up in Roseville, where we had lunch.
Although the car had great air conditioning, the sun was still beating in on me through the windows, and I started feeling dizzy and nauseous, and very tired. I had taken a whole Provigil that morning, too. Had a nice lunch in a very cool restaurant, where I started feeling somewhat better. I had a hard time eating everything because of my temporary crowns, so I left my roommate to finish up while I walked down a few doors to a frozen yogurt shop I'd noticed.
It was burning hot outside. Even back in the air-conditioned car, eating my frozen yogurt, I was still feeling tired and a little woozy. We wound our way back, found the hotel, and our room was really chilly. I was in heaven! My roommate thought it was too cold, so we kind of went back and forth about that until she would notice that I was very pale; she recognizes that as the "Kathy's not doing well" sign.
At the WNBA game that evening, the arena was quite warm, and I had no appetite for dinner. I had a bowl of mint chocolate chip soft ice cream and a bottle of water, but still almost fell asleep sitting there. OK, the game wasn't a very good one, but I felt pretty bad; very tired and woozy.
The next day we drove up to Marysville for the Peach Festival, where even before noon it was around 100, and heading for 108. We walked around, looking at the booths, taking pictures of neat buildings, churches, etc., trying to keep to the shade. We each carried cold water, but it only took a short while before a little old (healthy) lady took a look at us and said "you be careful out in the heat!" with a smile.
My roommate took a look at my face, and marched us back toward the car. She propped me in the shade while she went and bought us each a peach iced tea with lots of ice, then we tried to stay in the shade back to the car. Even shade is hot when it's that hot out! It was hard to walk, I was so tired. I put the iced tea on my wrists, on my carotid, the back of my neck. I mean the cup with all the ice, not pouring the tea on myself, lol!
The tea was great, and so was the air conditioning. I noticed a lot of dizziness when we were heading south, but just ignored it, enjoyed my tea, and tried not to feel so tired. We stopped at a Casino for lunch, and I enjoyed a little slot machine; put in $20, took out $30 after a lot of fun play, something with goldfishes. We stopped a couple more places, and I was so tired I could hardly stand it, so we went back to the hotel.
The next day was the worst, when it hit 105. We drove a short distance to look at Marshall's for good deals on Life is Good T-shirts (found one, plus a cool pair of shorts for me, and my roommate found a couple other shirts for her). I started getting really dizzy, having trouble walking, and not thinking real clearly.
My navigation skills were poor, I got kind of panicked, even in the cool car with cold water, I couldn't think clearly, had a hard time figuring things out spatially. It was horrible; I couldn't think! It was scary.
We managed to muddle our way through, and by luck ended up in Clarksburg, where we had planned to go for lunch.
We had a delightful lunch at this wine shop and deli, where we also had these sparkling soda's made with wine grape juice, non-alcoholic. I wish I could remember the name of the place, 'cause I'd suggest it to anyone who was in the area.
There was a gallery next door, and my roommate wanted to take a look. It was cooled by ceiling fans; I was OK for a short while, but my roommate kept talking to the gallery owner. I had to tell her twice that I needed to go before she really understood; I told her I was about to fall down.
We headed north on a really bumpy country road, and I was tired and woozy, really dizzy when I'd look at the crops or houses we were driving by. The sun was beating in on me. We were going to go shopping on the way to the second WNBA game, but my roommate looked over at me and said: "you need to lie down in the air-conditioned room before we go anywhere", and found our way back to the room.
I still had a hard time at the game, though starting with some soft ice cream cooled me down a bit and I was able to enjoy the game more; even ate a few bites of my roommate's huge taco salad when she was done; some chicken, guacamole, salsa, etc.
I was so glad to head home yesterday, though it's supposed to be in the 90's here today. The air quality was poor down there, which didn't help things. So, here I sit in front of the air conditioner, thinking I'd better go pick up Fluffy before it gets too hot, but not feeling very motivated.
At least my dizziness doesn't seem to be on-going like it was after my trip to Florida. I'll be doing my vestibular exercises just to make sure.
So, the heat, even being careful, made me even more fatigued, despite 200 mg of Provigil and a good night's sleep each night, brought back my bouts of dizziness/nausea, and even some scary episodes of not being able to think clearly. I'm looking at getting a cooling vest for any future trips into hot areas, or just here around home when it gets really hot.
Be careful out there! :o)
