Nystagmus?

I am still in limbo and it's been a while since I've been here since my Neurologist thought my problems were migraine related.  Turns out it the aura I had was a side-effect of Topomax.  Anyway, I'm back and I have a question.  I have problems with eye movement and it's really becoming bothersome.  I mostly notice it when I'm reading small print ( and typing like now).  When I try to read, my eyes shoot off to the left uncontrollably.  Also, when I wake in the mornings, my eyes wiggle back and forth really fast, like rapid eye movements.

I'm seeing my neurologist in 2 weeks because I ended up in ER with agonizing, shooting pain above my right ear and strange feeling of pressure on my ear, temple, and across my forehead.  The ER doctor said it sounded like neuropathy and I need to see my neurologist.  I seem to have symptoms of Autonomic and Peripheral neuropathy.  I haven't been here because I am still unsure if this could be MS, but my searches always lead me back to it.  Any ideas or insight would be great!

She seems to think the problem is related to my insomnia and/or drug reaction, even thought I am not taking anything now lol.  She gave me a prescription for Nortriptyline and wants to see me back in a month.  She even thinks the agonizing, intermittent pain I had above my ear is not Neuropathy, which is what the ER doctor thought it was.  This is my second Neurologist and I don't know if I should just stop going till something really significant happens, or switch again.  This is so frustrating, but if nothing has changed in a month, I will ask to see the neuro-opthamologist again, and definitely explain more about the pain I had, I know it was not a migraine.

SOLAIRE;

IF THE NEUROLOGIST DISREGARDS THE VISION DO WHAT EVER IT TAKES TO SEE A NEUROOPTHOMOLGIST.

YOU KNOW WHAT IS OCCURING WITH YOUR VISUAL ASPECT, WITH THE VISION BOUNCING AROUND AND THE DIZZINESS, YOU ARE A DEFINATE CANIDATE FOR A VNG. DO NOT BE AFRAID TO ASK THE NEUROLOGIST TO SCHEDULE THIS TESTING.

A VNG WILL TELL IF IT IS CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM OR VESTIBULAR OR PERIPHERAL.

I AM CURRENTLY BATTLING THE WORST OF MY MS SYMPTOMS AND THAT IS MY VISION. I CANNOT STRESS ENOUGH THAT ONE NEVER WAITS ON VISUAL PROBLEMS, YOU KNOW YOUR BODY PLEASE LISTEN TO IT, BE YOUR OWN ADVOCATE AND DO NOT ALLOW ANY DR. DISREGARD THE EYE PROBLEMS, DO WHAT EVER IT TAKES TO GET IT VEIW CORRECTLY.

I HAVE BEEN AWAY FROM THE FORUM FOR A FEW MONTHS DUE TO MY VISION, WHEN THIS FORUM STARTED I BELEIVE THERE WERE 6 OR 7 OF US, NOW WE HAVE A WONDERFUL GROUP HERE.

YOU NEVER LET YOUR VISION GO.

PUT EVERYTHING ON THE TABLE FOR THE NEUROLOGIST AND MAKE HIM/HER HEAR YOU, ALL TO MANY TIMES WE SHY AWAY AT FIRST, A NORMAL REACTION, MAKE THE NEURO UNDERSTAND THE VISION.

AS YOU CAN SEE I CANNOT STRESS THE IMPORTANCE OF THE VISION BEING ADDRESSED AS SOON AS A PROBLEM ARISES. WE NEED OUR VISION.

BE STRONG AT YOUR APPOINTMENT ASK QUESTIONS AND DO NOT LET THIS NEURO DISREGARD YOUR SYMPTOMS.

Thank you all so much for your responses.  I see my neurologist tommorrow.  I originally made the appointment to discuss the pain in my head from the neuropathy I had a couple months ago, but the problems with my eyes has become my #1 concern now.  I have had episodes of dizziness and buzzing when I move my eyes side to side, it's now worse than ever.  I can hardly move without feeling it.  It's really disconcerting when your vision becomes abnormal and I hope the neurologist has some answers for me, although after all this time, I don't have my fingers crossed.

I ALSO HAVE NYSTAGMUS, A FORM CALLED OR ABREVIATED INO, ASSOCIATED WITH MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS.

A VERY HIGHLY QUALIFIED OPTHOMOLOGIST CAN PROPERLY DETECT NYSTAGMUS, A TEST DONE BY A NEURO EARS NOSE AND THROAT DR. CALLED A ENG----UPDATED CALLED A VNG IS A TEST THAT CAN DETECT NYSTAGMUS AND IS A VERY RELIABLE, ONE OF THE BETTER TEST THAT CAN DEPICIT THE NYSTAGMUS AND WHAT SECTION OF THE BRAIN THAT IS CAUSING IT.

A VNG DONE CORRECTLY CAN BE BENEFICIAL AND DETECT LESIONS THAT A MRI CAN VERY EASILY MISS.

I HAVE A SPECIAL PAIR OF GLASSES THAT CONTAIN PRISMS THAT HELP THE NYSTAGMUS AND DOUBLE AND TRIPLE VISION, I WENT TO A LOW VISION FACILITY AND THEY VALIDATED THE INO AND MADE MY GLASSES THAT HAVE BEEN A GREAT ASSET WHEN READING AND ON THE COMPUTER.

LOCATING A LOW VISION CENTER CAN BE DIFFICULT DEPENDING ON THE STATE YOU RESIDE IN, IN OHIO THIS FACILITY WAS AWESOME AND THEY DONE NEUROLOGICAL VISUAL TESTING I HAD NEVER ENCOUNTERED BEFORE. THIS FACILITY HAS PROVIDED ME WITH VISUAL TOOLS THAT HAS MADE MY LIFE EASIER.

WHEN NYSTAGMUS IS DISCOVERED ONE NEEDS TO FIND THE CAUSE.

I have nystagmus, which is a result of the lesion in my right cerebellum.  It also caused my ataxia and balance issues.

I would get another MRI, or have your MRI re-evaluated by a radiologist.

I talked to my mother today and she reminded me that I had been told I have Ataxia, which can include sudden, uncontrollable, eye movements.  She's right, I guess it's part of the ataxia.  Now to find out why I'm having ataxia and neuropathy.  I do have a cyst in my brain, right temporal lobe, but I was told the only problems it would cause is possible seizures.

Thanks for your response.  My neurologist sent me an opthamologist about 9 months ago for minor double vision.  She found no problems at that time.

I am in limbo too.  I don't have anything to say other than what you probably already know.  I read about nystagmus being a ms symptom, but also among other mimics.  Did you get to see a opthomologist or whatever it is?  I had a few short episodes in which my eyes/vision jiggled back and forth.  But he didn't see anything that would explain that physically.  Maybe get to an eye doc.  Mine suggested a neuro opthomologist too, so you might want to consider that too..

The pain you explain could be trigeminal neuralgia.  Sometimes I get shooting pains like inside my ear, but I'm not sure.
