electric shock when blinking

HI everyone - I am just wondering if anyone has had the sensation of an electric shock when you blink?? I am having it now and it feels so weird- should I call my neurologist? Just had my yearly check up - then the symptoms started.

I have had the exact same thing happen to me from time to time. Every blink feels like I grab an electric fence. Started when I was a kid then fades away for a year or so, then happens for a few days.I can do it anytime I want to I just remember the feeling and blink and bam! I am 30 now,and as far as I know I don't have MS. I thought I was just crazy.kinda weird that there are other people out there

I have two dominate eyes. I constantly change eyes. This is all done with out me thinking about it. When I change eyes too quickly I get a shock sensation. In my case if I did not switch eyes I would have double vision. It has to do with my optic nerve that was damaged before the age of 2. If my damage came after the age of two I would have double vision because the the brain could not adjust.

I would go to my GP and ask for a neurological exam. That is reflexes and such. If it is abnormal he can send you to a neurologist or a neuro opthalmologist..

Hi!  I am having this sensation right now!  I feel like every time I blink I get this full body jarring sensation?  It is really weird.  I used to get it before when I would be low on my antidepressant, like if I had run out and was only taking one a day for a few days until I got a refill.  I haven't changed anything lately, and I am good on my meds.  Did you ever find a reason/answer?

HI and welcome to our little corner of the world, you might like to read our health pages, there you'll find answers to just about any question you might also have. To be honest with you though i'm totally stumped on this one, an electric shock sensation when you blink, that would have to be a new one here.

The feeling of an electric shock, most commonly when you bend your neck forward is called the L'hermitte's sign, sometimes called the Barber Chair phenomenon, is an electrical sensation that runs down the back and into the limbs.

Paresthesia on the other hand is any abnormal sensation on the skin that has no apparent physical cause. Paresthesia includes things like numbness, tingling, buzzing, itching etc and can be temporary or permanent. Paresthesia can appear in any part of the body: in the trunk, limbs, fingers, toes, face or head.

People will often mention a vibrating feeling in a body part and that usually falls into the paresthesia box, so from my way of thinking its possible that what your describing is more likely paresthesia than L'hermitte's. For months and months I experienced a buzzing or vibrationg feeling, just the right side under my eye (bag area lol) and running slightly up the nose. It was all the time though, definitely worse when I closed my eyes trying to get to sleep but i'm pretty sure that was only because it was annoying as heck, yes very weird and i was less tollerant of it.

Sorry i couldn't be of more help, maybe someone else will chime in and be of more help :-)

Cheers...........JJ

PS not a bad idea to tell your neuro's office if your concerned at all
