Scared I have ma

Hello all,
I'm a 44 yo male with symptoms that are making me stress if I have MS.  My foot and calf went numb a few days ago and the started twitching and painfully spasming.  The next day the symptoms persisted.  The following days was a woozy.  The symptoms spread to my other leg and then I started getting sharps pin prick like sensations over my body.  I also started getting a strong full pain behind my left eye.  I also got a pain on the right side of my throat that last for about 30 min and was incredibly painful.  It only surfaces at about 3 pm everyday.  All the symptoms I listed above are still present and it has been 5 days.  I'm pretty scared.  I have an appointment with my primary but I'm wondering if I should be nervous about this.  Does this sound like MS?

Hello all,
You have all been so helpful so I thought I'd let you know more results today.  Had a brain MRI with and without contrast and came back normal.  Also got more blood tests back.  A complement c3 and c4 were really low.  Rheumatoid factor and A second Ana came back negative.  Are complements used to look for ms?

Aspen,
My magnesium was smack in the middle of the reference range and my vitamin d was right at the bottom of the range.  My b12 and 6 were good as well.  I did have a positive Ana antibody but the titer was the lowest so not sure what's going on there.

Oops...hit send by accident.  My left leg is basically constantly tingling and I twitch sporadically everywhere.  I also feel like my body is vibrating ever so lightly.  And the fatigue.  I have never been so drained before in my life.  My doc isn't sure what it is and basically wants to wait it out.  I'm not a fan of that approach.  Any suggestions?

The leg is likely something real.  Most of the rest of your symptoms could be anxiety (waiting and unknowns are difficult - I did it for three years).

Are you sure he tested for magnesium and D?  Theyre not commonly tested here.  The test for magnesium isn't very good either since less than 1% of magnesium circulates in the blood.

Hello all,
Just an update.  I got blood work done and no vitamin deficiencies or underlying condition.  My symptoms have pretty much stayed the same except my left leg is now

cemustang, have you had bloodwork done?  In particular, B12, D and magnesium?

Deficiencies in these vitamins, hormones and minerals can not only cause neurological symptoms but also
anxiety.

Please make sure your primary checks these out.  The
Blood serum test isn't very accurate; if it shows low you are REALLY low!

Hello again,  so I had an MRI of the Brain that came back negative.  My left eye still has intermittent pain behind it and the area around it on the skin feels numb or swollen like all the way to the ear.  I am starting to get pains now that shoot through my middle back through my torso to my abdomen.  Both feet are now fairly numb with areas of burning and tingling.  I have been pretty much dizzy since this all began.  I don't think this is a pinched nerve or disc issue my wife thinks it is.  This morning I started getting electric like zaps in my right arm.  Is the symptoms something I should go to the er for?  I read about NMO and it says the quicker you start steroids the better the prognosis.  Please help!

It doesn't sound like a medical emergency to me, i don't think you need to go to the ER with what you've described experiencing but you probably should see your GP now your symptoms are increasing.

On that note i should inform you of the possible negative effects that googling symptoms can have on your mental health, if you already have a lot of anxiety about your health......

Health related anxiety can escalate the symptoms you experience when you google, and escalate your anxiety and fears. The researching of medical conditions instead of reassuring you and reducing your anxiety, it actually feeds your anxiety and you can start experiencing more and more of the symptoms you've been reading about.

Typically there is a medical related trigger eg a pinched nerve, migraine, pulled muscle etc etc to explain their symptoms but the more problematic medical issues is their high level of anxiety, which continues to escalate and make their situation worse and worse if left untreated and they continue to research medical conditions they are fearful of...

I'm not saying that is your situation just that you've mentioned your anxiety and it might be helpful to you if you're aware of what health related anxiety is known to do to people and try if you can to step back and focus on lowering your anxiety so it doesn't lead you to worry about medical issues you probably don't have.

See your doctor, try to keep an open mind and stop trying to diagnose your self online if reading about medical conditions is in any way making you feel scared or escalating your anxiety....breath!

Hope that helps......JJ

Thanks.  My rational side of my brain tells me the same thing but my anxious side keeps on popping up.  Ever since we had the kids, I always think the worst--it's probably a pinched nerve or herniated disc with a healthy dose of anxiety sprinkled on top. I have an appt with my PCM so I'll just lay it all out there for her to recommend a path forward.  Thanks for your thoughts.

Hi and welcome,

I don't really have any clear ideas on what might be going on but it actually doesn't sound suggestive or consistent with a neurological condition like MS. MS literally means multiple scars, 'basically' the brain and or spinal cord lesions (scars) causes symptoms to present within corresponding locations on the body.....MS genuinely isn't a condition that is able to cause 'all over' symptoms, or cause symptoms to 'spread' from one side of the body to the other.

Try to keep an open mind on what is causing this, it is less likely to be a neurological condition like MS and more likely to be something else because you are describing a symptom pattern which would be untypical of MS.....take a step back from worrying about MS, and breath!

Hope that helps.......JJ
