Swallowing problems?

I'm not sure how to classify one of my more recent problems. Partially since it isn't a constant problem or more than one problem. I'm not even sure how to state what is going on with my doctor.

1. Lately just about every time I have soup to eat I'll start coughing like crazy as I sip in some of the soup. What I'm not sure about is if it is due to a swallowing problem or sinus drainage ( due to hot soup).

2. Some times when drinking something I will also start coughing like crazy and my lungs will hurt.

3. A lot of the time while eating I will get very short of breath.

4. When I climb into bed ( just about as soon as I lay down) I will get short of breath most nights. Sometimes this includes the aching lungs.

Any ideas?

Dennis

Dennis,
I am a practicing RN possibly with MS which is why I'm on this site (just FYI). I believe you are "aspirating" (technical word for swallowing food particles into your lungs). This can cause pneumonia and is not good for you to be experiencing frequently. Swallowing difficulties ,including aspirating, are a known symptom of MS. You should request your MD du jour refer you for a swallow eval , or better yet a video swallow eval soon. Good news is this symptom can be managed easily without changing the foods in your diet. Likely the texture of the foods will have to change however. Good luck and hope this helps.

This should not be because of allergies as it started several month ago during winter and I have already been tested for just about every thing someone can be allergic to. I had the allergy testing because for some strange reason I have sneezing fits for some unknown reason.

I'm not on any sleep meds, new or old. Although I plan on talking to my PC this Friday about something as my new med (CellCept) has been messing with my sleep which is a known side effect of it.

Sorry you are going through yjis you must be miserable.

I had similar symptoms before I got my Asthma and allergies under control. I started and tried different things. Losing thirty pounds and a strict no processed diet has helped. Also  Zyrtec allergy pills everyday and Singulair. My insurance will not pay for Singulair at all. Rinsing my sinuses with saline and taking Mucinex. I take a lot of Mucinex this time of year. I used to take Benydrl and Chlortrimeton but they dried me out and impacted the mucus. I now hardly even need my Symbicort much less Albuteral. I used to have to sleep in a recliner. Eating was a bear because of choking. Now I can't recall the last time I choked. I still have a lot of symptoms this time a year just not the coughing.

I hope you are better soon.
