Toe and foot cramps

I will be relaxing and all of a sudden I get severe, very painful muscle spasms that bend my foot so bad it feels like my foot is going to break right in the arch and my little toe and the toe next to it usually spread out in some kind of spasm spreading out to the side and my other toes turn under. I have no idea what is happening. I have to grab my foot and really force it back to a normal position as well as my toes, which is very painful. Then it will start all over again. It happens several times in a matter of mins and sometimes for hours . Most of the time it happens when I'm resting but has also happened when I am sitting or walking. Once the spasms are over I still have a hard time walking for several days due to the arch of my feet being so sore. What could be causing this to happen?

My cramps usually happen when I have stood too much.

I get terrible foot cramps as u described, it can get very painful.. It sounds like my feet do the exact opposite of what yours do, mine goes super flat, flattening my arch and my toes spread  2 on one side 3 on the other. I have MS as well, I also have Hughes syndrome, I asked my rheumatologist what might be causing this, and he suggest sometimes malnourishment can cause it, I don't really think  I'm malnourished. Nothing has helped them and I haven't gotten any explanation. I did however recently have a spinal Mri. There was damage in there not related to MS that just might be the culprit. I'll keep u posted. Good luck, I know I find myself rolling on the floor sometimes trying to get my hands in just the right place to get it to let go. Much luck!

Hi there,

Your question has landed in the MS community but foot cramps are basically caused by many different things not necessarily a medical causation and foot cramps are not very suggestive of MS. I would suggest you consider due to your age group, that you bring this to the attention of your doctor but keep in mind that it could actually be an issue with your foot ware not supporting your arch appropriately and orthotic inserts might help.

see article below for some helpful solutions, as well as the commonly associated medical causes...
