Will it ever end?

I just had a call from my friend that I worked with at the hospital and one of our residents has passed away.  She was mentally challenged girl/woman with about a 5 year old mentality and we all loved her to death!  She had to undergo kidney dialysis 4 days a week and when I was there last week they told me that she had developed an abcess the size of a luncheon plate on her abdomen and it ruptured and was a real mess.  They had taken her to hospital and they apparently did emergency surgery on Sunday but it wasn't enough and she just couldn't take it and passed away this morning.

This little girl absolutely loved everyone and at least once a week she would have one of us make up birthday invitations for her on our computers so that she could pass them out to people she wanted at her birthday party.  I arranged to have an extra cake made by the kitchen every week for "her" birthday party and there was always a nurse or another resident that would sing happy birthday to her and have a piece of her cake.  Her real birthday was May 5th and she did have her last real birthday cake with a huge party from what I heard.  Everyone in this extended care centre is going to somehow be touched by the death of this "little girl" but it hurts that I never got to see her last week and I can't look forward to seeing her on my visits anymore...you see, this little girl would get all dressed up if she knew I was coming and would wait at the front door all day if necessary until I got there and I would get hugs and kisses from her like there was no tomorrow...no more kisses from my "little girl".  She was 54 years old.

Why are all these people in our lives leaving us all of a sudden?  How much more of this can I take?  I don't know...
Rena

I was about to post on this forum when I read this.  I just wish you strength through this difficult time and to know you have the support of everyone here, new members and old.  I remember losing a very close friend with down's syndrome some years back, and know how her unconditional love of life and people brought happiness to everyone who met her.  To this day her memory brings me joy, and I hope that one day you will find the memories and honour of knowing someone like her makes up for the terrible pain of losing her.  When you have just lost someone it's hard to feel blessed, but you are, for having had her friendship.  We want the ones we love to stay with us always, and in a way they do, inside us.  Cry all you need to, tell any of us how you feel, message me anytime.  None of us can make the pain go away, but ahead of the pain you will find peace.  I hope you have people you can share this with face to face too.  You need friends who will spend time with you, hug you, let you rage if you need to.  We will do all we can here.
