I have had tinnitus for at least the last 3 years. Mine is 24/7 and is a fairly low volume high ptiched whine. As others have said, it's been around for so long that it becomes white noise mostly. in very quiet environments I am much more likely to be aware of it.
If yours is around 24/7 it would seem be invalidate the concept of inactive MS. If it is present your MS is active :-)

I have had the tinnitus 24/7 for a couple of years now. I have never had a break from it but I am still hopeful one day it will disappear. I have 3 different high pitch sounds which two of them are not constant but rev up when I'm tired. I have always found that my tinnitus is louder when I'm fatigued.
I was told that it's really important not to focus on your tinnitus or you could start pulling your hair out. Some people can get really depressed or anxious from tinnitus as well. I have learnt I can never have the quiet that I used to have so I always have the TV or radio on 24/7.
I have some great white noise apps like Sleep bug pro, Relaxia & Naturespace. I particularly love the train noise on sleep bug pro to sleep to because it is so relaxing to me. I don't have the TV, Radio or Sleep bug pro very loud that it's distracting me from whatever else I'm doing but if I turn it off to have nothing then I do start focusing on my tinnitus.
When I saw my doc about all of this he said that I was doing all the right things but if I did struggle then I could try tinnitus retraining. It's been suggested that I put a small radio on an AM radio station under my pillow at bedtime as well which I will try when I get a small radio.
I can only suggest that you try & do everything you can to distract yourself from the tinnitus. It will lower in it's volume usually over time but be aware of things that can make it louder like fatigue or poor sleep, anxiety, being unwell etc.

I'm so sorry to hear that you too have tinnitus. Unfortunately there is nothing that will help with the volume of it, although it increase or decrease at times on it's own. I can tell you that over time you will get used to it.
I've had mine since August 2012 in one ear and now have a slightly difference frequency in the other ear but am rarely bothered by either.
The big thing is not to focus on it or it will literally drive you insane. Put a radio on or some music so it's not the most dominant noise you hear while you learn to get used to it. After awhile you won't need it.
Some days I would really just love some silence but unfortunately that's probably never going to happen again :-(
