OT: Flight HM-17 "shot down" - 298 innocents lost

Today, my fellow Australian's awoke to the shock and horrifying news, that terrorism has once again hit our country.

Malaysian Airliner flight HM-17 Amsterdam's to Kualumpur, with connecting flights bound for Australia has been taken from the skies. The passenger plane was shot down by a surface to air missile, whilst flying over Eastern Ukraine and flying in international air space. Russian backed rebel insurgents are firmly in sight as those responsible for this unexplainable act!

Today we grieve for the innocent lives taken. Many were on their way here to attend a large international Aides conference, others were just coming home............

this news left me shattered - I don't imagine we will ever get the answers for this one.  But you are right - the impact to the AIDS/HIV research community is enormous and will leave a void that 's hard if not impossible to fill.

Today is the anniversary of Nelson Mandela's birthday - a man who dedicated his life to peace and helping to show us how hatred is taught and not something we are born with.  I keep hoping those lessons  will settle into all corners of our world.

It's left me stunned, just the global impact this will have is staggering, loosing up to a 100 people from one field is unimaginable, so many highly regarded aides researchers, scientists, specialists etc, people who've dedicated their lives to humanity and they are just..........gone!

Too many innocent men, women and children are lost in every conflict, i'd like to believe this was a tragic mistake but no matter what their justification, it's just senseless violence and destruction of other human beings......of which i will never, ever accept nor understand.

Too many lives are lost in this world to terrorism and war. I just don't understand & I never will.

My thoughts and prayers are with all the families, particularly those who are from my home country of Australia. My heart goes out to you all.

I was utterly shocked when I turned on the television this morning to see this awful news.  I feel for the families involved and also the people of Malaysian airlines.  They have suffered greatly too of late.

So sad .
