Cerebral Spinal Fluid Leakage

I have had two sinus surgeries: One in 1992 to remove nasal polyps and the other in 2002 for the same reason.  I have what I believe to be frequent sinus infections at least that's what the ENT is treating me for.  I don't have many sinus headaches although they do occur from time to time.  Recently, I was diagnosed with an ear infection.  Over the past two months I've been on 3 different types of antibiotics to treat sinus infections as has been the case over the past 10 years or so.  However, recently I noticed that I have a metallic taste in my mouth and I do have clear drainage from my nose when I bend over.  Could this be anyway associated with CSFL?

This discussion is related to Cerebrospinal Fluid Leak causing a lot of pain is surgery dangerous?.

Hi...b4 u consider this a CSF leak, which if u had u would be vomiting and the HA's would be horrendous....I had one so I do know....

But do look at ur BP....and make sure u do not have low levels of vitamins and minerals....there r conditions that can cause these symptoms u mentioned, so  u will need the help of a dr testing u to know for sure.

Good luck

I have been having blackouts upon standing witout any warning (have already had triple by-pass; and vascular study on legs); chronic and constant headache upon waking or standing in the morning and lasts all day until I finally fall asleep at night.  It feels like I there's not enough fluid and something to keep me from falling when I stand (very light headed and weak all over) after sitting for a while.  I also have chronic sinus infections and have now had sinus surgery and am on my 4th antibiotic. Have been diagnosed with brain stem stroke.  Have also had perm damage to my neck and thorasic area of back during an accident. Could there be a CSF leak and could this be causing my blackouts and chronic and sometimes sever headache on the upper lft side of my head??

I have a leak through the nose too.  I discovered  it last month after having a sinus infection.  I watched the same episode of Mystery Diagnosis a few months ago and then again last night.  I haven't gone through the same trauma as she did because my ENT doctor took a sample when he saw it drip from my nose.  I have an appointment next with another doctor  who performed the procedure to repair the leak.  I also have an appointment for an MRI to determine the size and exact location of the leak.  I have asthma and my doctor recommended sleeping with my head elevated to prevent the build up of fluid in my lungs while sleeping.

I'm also being treated for thyroid cancer too.  So my life lately is doctors and more doctors.

Hi,

Thanks for writing in.
Most of the cases of CSF leak through the nose occur after blunt head trauma, endocopic sinus surgery, pituitary surgery and mastoid surgery.
Since you have a history of surgery although it was for removal of polyps from the nose, the possibility of CSF leak should be kept in mind.
I would suggest you to discuss this possibility with your doctor and undergo tests like lab examination of the fluid and CT scan. Take care!
