Memory loss

Hi,

I wanna explain a case here.

My friends father had a brain tumor and under went a surgery. But they could not remove a small part of it because it was very close to a main nerve. This small piece was removed by radiation. But doing this resulted in side effect like shrinking of brain leading to memory loss. He is in critical condition now. Is there any solution for this. If yes, please give that advice fast.

Hello.

Cerebral atrophy (shrinking) is an unfortunate complication of radiation therapy for brain tumors. The brain tissue immediately surrounding the tumor is inflamed and is vulnerable to radiation necrosis (cell death). The atrophy may start 1 to 4 months after the radiation and manifests as various cognitive dysfunctions (for example, memory loss) in 6 months or earlier.

Here is an extract from - http://www.aboutcancer.com/brain_radiation_comps_aminoff.htm

"The pathogenesis of the cerebral atrophy is not clear. In some instances, true communicating hydrocephalus, perhaps from radiation-induced arachnoiditis or obliteration of pacchionian granulations, appears to be causal. In other instances, there is simply loss of cerebral substance. Pathology reveals spongiosis of the white matter, but no vascular changes such as those seen with radiation necrosis. Except in patients who respond to shunting, there is no treatment for the cerebral atrophy."

It appears that your friend's father is deteriorating by the day. Please confirm with the doctors if he has a hydrocephalus. There are certain neuro-protective medicines which can help slow down the atrophy. If he is old, age related cerebral atrophy may also complicate the matter.

Can you ask your friend about the medicines his/her father is receiving?

Regards
