Hey Charlie, I am 37 years old and herniated a disc about 6 years ago. At first I had the exact same problems you are experiencing (seized up over simple bending tasks, intense pain, hard to walk, etc) but I was only treated to bed rest for a couple days after each episode and then pain meds (over the counter - I suggest Alleve because it is Neproxin) to cope. I realize it can be scary and depressing because it interrupts everything and there is very little information out there. BUT over the next few years after the initial injury the episodes became less sever and less frequent. Now I am back to the gym, pain free, and only suffer occasional stiffness. I can tell you from experince that simple, slow movement (like walking) followed by rest will help much more than simply laying in bed. Only do as much as you can and take it slow but the more you can get up and get mobile the better off you will be.
Later I reccommend Yoga or working out at the gym - but TAKE IT SLOW! Talk to an orthopedist about getting some simple exercises to alleviate the stiffness and pain. And make sure that you need the surgery before it takes place.
I wish you the best and hope this will at least improve your outlook.
yeah me again
i forgot to mention that on three occassions
my back has seized up from simple tasks such as bending down to stroke the dog
getting up from the computer and pulling back the bed covers
on all these occassions i have not been able to move my legs for atleast 1 hour
and have been screaming and crying because of the severe pain running through my back at that point.a heat patch doesn't help and nor does an ice pack either so im confused on what to do when this happens also.
I have my mum and dad sit next to me but that all that can happen
Also when ic ough, sneeze and even laugh hard a shooting pain runs through my leg but the more i laugh the more the pain and the more the pain the more i laugh which is a toughie.
cheers to anyone who can help me.
