Numbness above my ankle

I fell the weekend before Father's Day while hiking in a state park. I sprained my ankle while falling down some natural stairs that were built into the trail and had to hike out 1.5 miles to the trail head. I walked on my sprain for a week before seeing a doctor, but ever since my fall the area above my left ankle has been numb. Occassionally I will feel a tingling sensation like a foot "waking up" after "falling asleep" but then it will go back to being numb. Any recommendations for treatments or possible theories as to what I did?

Thanks!

I certainlly am trying to ice & ellevate when it's possible. I'm also wearing some supportive hiking shoes so that my ankle won't roll. Thanks for your suggestions! When I see the doctor I'll ask about a possible hematoma and damaged nerves.

Well, sounds like the swelling is pushing on a nerve or nerves.  You might possibly have a hematoma, a pulling of blood in the tissues, with swelling.

Do you have it wrapped and are you keeping weight OFF of it?  Elevating it when you can?

Yes, there was an x-ray taken to determine how badly I'd sprained it as well as to confirm that it wasn't broken. There's still some slight swelling, but if the area is poked hard enough it acts like a bruise. Very sore.

Was there imaging done of the ankle?  Is the ankle swollen still?

Sounds like a nerve inpingement around the ankle.
