I had an EMG done on my right leg in May, 2012 and I am still suffering from it. I've had 3 previous EMGs done over the years so I know it is not pleasant but this was unbearable. During the test, the doctor asked me, "What happened to your leg?" About two inches of my calf collapsed. He said "You must have been sitting in the waiting room with your legs crossed." It is now 8 months later, my calf is the same, and the nerve pain continues in the spots where he inserted the needle (ankle, shin, lower calf), and my knee and groin. Three times I had to get anti-inflammatory medication because my knee swelled up so bad. When I told my primary care physician, she told me "that's impossible." I don't know what to do or who to go to for this. I will NOT have another EMG. I can’t find an answer to what would be the course of treatment (if any) for this. Eight months of this pain is driving me batty. Please help! Thank you for your time.
Well, without a detailed clinical evaluation it would be difficult to determine the cause of your symptoms. Possibilities that may need to be considered include infections, reactive, inflammation, neuro-muscular issues such as neuropathies, myopathies, micronutrient deficiencies, vascular causes etc. I would suggest getting this evaluated by an internist initially and depending on the cause diagnosed/ suspected, it can be managed accordingly or specialist care may be sought.
Hope this is helpful.
Take care!
