Hi,
The specific causes of dystonia are unknown. Some of the possible causes could be -a pathology of the central nervous system (mostly in the brain parts concerned with motor function), genetic causes, environmental conditions, brain damage, trauma, use of certain drugs, or diseases of the nervous system such as Wilson's disease, Environmental factors are suspected to trigger the development of dystonias.
There is no known successful treatment for the condition. Reduction of the types of movements that trigger or worsen dystonia, reduction of stress, plenty of rest, moderate exercise, and relaxation techniques do help to reduce the symptoms. Sedation of brain, blocking nerve communications with the muscles via drugs, neuro-suppression or denervation are the latest treatment modalities but they have many adverse effects and risks. Please consult a neurologist to discuss the treatment plan. Hope this helps you. Take care and regards!
Hi mIsty, I have what is called cervical dystonia, which makes my neck shake in a no no manner. Have your friend see a movement disorder clinic, they know the most, and have him be treated soon. I can no longer move my neck, the cramps, spasms and tremors have left my neck locked to the right, and have lost use of my right fingers. I am on baclofen, for the cramps and spasms, but as for the shaking(tremors) I do not believe there is anything to stop that. I have been told that dystonia is a muscle disorder, that the muscles actually shorten, that is why we cramp and shake. Best regards to your friend, and yourself, and so it doesnt get to the point i am now at, please look into the movement disorder clinics. You can read about them online. They are what you might call a neurologists, specialist. Hope this helps you. Warden63
