Well, that sounds normal.  Sometimes certain neuromuscular disorders/diseases present in a specific pattern, i.e. affecting the lower extremities first then the upper extremities.

The physician could be looking for a number of things as far as a disorder/ disease.

An EMG evaluates and records the electrical activity produced by skeletal muscles.

they did do my lower leg and foot on the same side as the arm/hand, but seemed more interested in my hand which I am assuming they are checking for fine motor skills??? I have numbness, tingling, burning pain in my feet, stabbing pain in my lower legs and thighs, problems with coordination and balance, burning pain in my lower back-- to name a few! :)

Hmmm......why would they be doing an EMG on your upper extremities and not your lower extremities?  I am NOT sure what they are looking for.

What exactly are your symptoms in detail?
