excruciating electric shock like pain the back of the knee

I have excruciating electric shock like pain at the back of my knee..left only...it comes without any warning, so severe that i scream...sometimes it doesn't come for few days then it comes 10 times a day...so bizarre..going to do a mri today..the pain lasts only few seconds..once the pain is gone, there is no ache or pain at the knee at all..no pain when i walk or run..nothing, Ultrsound ruled out any clot..there is no swelling, redness either..if anybody has any answers please let me know...thanks in advance,,,

Diabetic nerve pain.
I have the same thing and that's what it is.
And yes, it is very, very painful.
Come and go at will.
Feel helpless no control.

I had the same symptoms: 30 seconds bursts of shocking sensation behind my right knee at random times such as driving, sitting at my desk, mowing the lawn, sleeping in bed, standing at the sink and going to the bathroom.  My theory is that it could have been caused by a pinched sciatic nerve, caused by sitting on the toilet for long periods of time. Also, I used an off-brand squaty potty, which may place the nerve in a position where it could be pinched by the toilet seat. After I made the connection and stopped using the stool and got off the toilet when I was done with my business, the shocking sensations stopped. Stretching seemed to help relieve the pain but I don't feel it prevented the shocks. When I noticed that massaging my hamstring triggered shocks, I thought about the sciatic nerve. I hope this helps others. I am 41, 180 lbs male.

I have recently acquired the electric shock like pulse that's fires at random night or day sometimes for about 20 seconds at my left leg next to my knee cap inside leg I have wrapped a weight loss waste band around the afflicted area to stow the little blighter away but my to hand bandage has to stay on constantly if I take it off for just ten minits it comes back with a vengeance . Wow.  So weird.  I have been getting the EXACT SAME SYMPTOMS:  sudden --- out of no where --- extreme sharp, like being electrocuted, pain but always in my left leg, two inches or so beneath my knee on the back side.  It is maybe 3/4" deep (apprx).  So weird.  So very painful.  It goes away suddenly, but the severity is notable even to a person with high tolerance to pain.  I have been fighting some sort of weird infection that has been lingering lately, so I'm not sure if that would have anything to do with it.  I just find it so odd that no one is reporting it on their right leg.

I have electric shock behind my knees and restless leg. Mine is from caffeine. It only happens if I ingested caffeine. When I don't ..no shock therapy lol. Vitamin d and magnesium will stop restless leg in some ppl like me BUT if I drank caffeine, its a wrap. I get another shock regard less of the vitamin I take. Hope this helps.

I have a shooting pain in left knee a couple times a day. No major falls or direct damage to the knee. I'm 47 and just got a good report on my physical just 3 weeks ago

Having same issue as OP.
I am CPT/fitness instructor in great shape..no injury to
leg, knee etc.
Severe taser like shock behind  left knee/top of calf that
lasts only a seconf or two but bringe me to
my knees..
Has anyone recieved a proper diagnosis?

I have begun having the exact same issue. Two years ago I injured my back and have pain in my right leg and have epidural treatment however the last one was incredibly painful and burned so bad but had no pain relief at all and now I have the terrible pain in the left knee, it is my theory that the dr actually injured the nerve whilst performing the failure epidural. I am going to my GP tommorrow as I have never had any left side pain and if its not from the surgeon then it may be a sign of further nerve damage from my initial back injury.....

Thanks for your comment. My symptoms are identical to the original post - electric shock, excruciating  pain for a few seconds, then nothing. I have had a compression fracture to C7 and although this is an old injury, (1979) it is not getting any better with age.

Hi Dr Srivastava. I am amazed, I am not able to see my Dr for a week so I googled the symptoms I am having. My symptoms are identical to the original post. I have this pain only iin the left knee at the back. It's like an electric shock and brings tears to my eyes when it comes on. No residual pain after, no other pain at any time in the area. Pain is very localised. I did think that my compression fracture of C7 and continued back issues may be a contributing factor possibly? I am unsure as to whether to seek a referral to a neurologist or simply get scans etc?

Hi, Thank you for your question. It sounds that you might be having a nerve impingement at your knee that may have raised due to any injury (fracture) or any fibrous tissue. It will be best that you consult a neurologist for an general examination and investigations in order to reach at appropriate diagnosis and treatment. Hope this helps.

Just a thought, but pain in the knee could be nerve damage in the spine. Many people with spinal compression have radiating pain to and past the knees.
Try going to a neurologist. They can do test to see where the pain originates.
