foot drop is where u lose the ability to lift your foot (obviously) -but there can be a few nerve related causes -these can originate from in the spine or anywhere down to the foot in question. it can be caused by physical damage eg tearing -as in my case, or compression, there are also some diseases that may cause it eg lou garics syndrome (not sure of spelling). Pregnancy can be a cause -usually mild. in my case the only cure is a tendon transfer or less likley a nerve graft -both procedures ar complicated and very individual, depending on what is available to work with.. they tend to want to wait 18mths to make sure of no recovery to the nerves before they procede..(i posted in neck and back forum about a week ago but no response.)
This is only from my experience and there may be much more involved, hope it helps

There is a term called "warm ischemic time".
When a nerve is deprived of blood supply, oxygen and nutrients for a certain amount of time the cells atrophy and the nerve essentially decomposes.
In the case of foot drop this is commonly caused by chronic unrelieved compression of the sciatic nerve in the lumbar segments of the spinal column.
