hallucinations after surgery

My down syndrome Sister had a benign tumour removed from the left side of her brain four months ago. she is fifty six years old and the operation was the first she has ever had.   Since then she has had shouting bouts which are very disturbing for her and her carers.   We cannot understand what is wrong as she cannot communicate her fears.   I believe she  is having hallucinations, but nobody seems to pin-point her problem    We no not know what treatment is best for her.  Please can you help.

Hi.

It should be understood that while the target of the surgery is to remove the tumor, some normal brain tissues surrounding the tumor may have also been removed or affected during the surgery.  Your sister's present symptoms may represent what is called a 'frontal lobe syndrome'.  This syndrome manifests with personality changes, severe mood swings and sometimes be mistaken as a psychiatric condition (such as that of hallucinations).

Controlling the brain swelling after the surgery may be the key to recovery.  This can be done through use of steroids or osmotic diuretics.  I suggest you discuss these options with her doctors.

Regards and God bless.
